Home in a Wind Farm: Living with PSC approved setbacks in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin

Lisa

March 18, 2009 1:21:04 PM

The state of Wisconsin permits 400 foot tall turbines to be sited 1000 feet from the homes of non-participating residents. Towns and counties can adopt stricter standards provided it can be demonstrated the health and safety of the residents might be at risk. As of March, 2009 there is pending legislation which would strip towns, villages and counties of the ability to create more protective ordinances than those approved by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC). This video is one in a series intended to help Wisconsin legislators understand why the PSC's setbacks and noise limits are not sufficiently adequate to protect residents from noise, shadow-flicker and other problems associated with poorly sited industrial wind turbines.

Industrial wind turbine shadow flicker in Wisconsin 2008

Lisa

December 21, 2008 6:13:15 PM

In Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, in spite of what wind developers and wind lobbyists assert, 1000-foot setbacks are not a sufficient distance between homes and wind turbines that are 40 stories tall. There are indeed problems with noise and shadow flicker at this distance. Ask people in the town of Byron in Fond du Lac what they think of the 1000 foot setback.

Wind power no magic bullet, professor says

Lisa

August 02, 2008 10:09:47 AM

News report from KTKA TV49 in Kansas:

Duration 1 minute 40 seconds

Transcript: Disappearance of native prairie chickens linked to wind farms

Windmills have dotted the Kansas countryside for well over a century, but now a bigger more powerful breed is sprouting up.

Steve Trent is concerned.

"There's going to be people who make a lot of money off this, and the rest of us are going to suffer," he said.

Trent lives next to a 100 turbine wind farm in Butler County.

These farms are touted as good for the environment because they create power without creating air pollution, but Trent says they harm the planet in other ways.

"There's an environmental footprint that they make," he said.

Trent says that footprint has stomped out the native prairie chickens which have disappeared, and they have also destroyed the area's natural beauty.

Now he's wondering if that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Just as a coal power plant consumes coal to create energy, the giant windmills consume wind. That means they literally eat it up, sucking energy out of the atmosphere.

If more and more of these things are built, what will that mean for the planet?

"I think it's one of those hypothetical questions that pops into your mind and maybe there will be reason to know the answer to it," Wichita State University Professor and Mechanical Engineer David Koert said

Koert says the wind farms we have now are not nearly big enough to make a difference.

However, he says massive amounts of wind turbines in any given area could possibly alter the climate.

"Would it be more rain, less rain, gentler winds, you just don't know. but yeah, there could be an effect," Koert said.

Trent says he hasn't noticed any weather changes where he lives, but says has seen enough to know wind farms can generate problems for the planet.

Aboveground transmission power line defies Hartland Township ordinance

Lisa

July 29, 2008 8:17:40 AM

In 2007, The Michigan Public Service Board approved construction of an overhead transmission line in Livingston and Oakland counties by ITC Transmission. The Transmission line defies a Hartland Township local ordinance which requires all new electrical transmission lines to be buried. The new power line will stretch for 21-miles through a pristine section of Hartland Township. The poles will be between 100 and 140 feet in height.

Similar transmission infrastructure is proposed or under construction to service wind facilities in the US. The Hartland residents express their concerns in this video.

Welcome to Mars Hill - Part 1 of 3

Lisa

December 25, 2007 11:50:11 AM

This video introduces you to the people of Mars Hill ME who are being driven from their homes due to wind turbine noise. UPC Wind installed 28 1.5 MW turbines within 2600 feet of where these families live. The problem of noise developed almost immediately after the turbines were turned on.

Welcome to Mars Hill:

Wind energy facilities in the Columbia River Gorge?

Lisa

December 14, 2007 9:14:49 AM

This is a September 2007 FOX News report on the Cascade Wind Project, a large industrial wind facility proposed on Sevenmile Hill in Wasco County, Oregon, immediately adjacent to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Each wind tower would be 400 feet tall and highly visible from several miles away. The project would forever change the natural scenic views in the Rowena area of the Gorge. This landscape has been largely unaltered since Lewis and Clark traveled through the Gorge two hundred years ago.
