Hurricaine destroys turbines in Puerto Rico.
This 2.5 MW Clipper model C-96 turbine, part of NextEra's Endeavor I Wind Energy Center, burned for hours before this video was taken. The video shows the turbine's massive blade fall to the ground after first standing on its end before collapsing into a trail of black smoke and flames. The Endeavor I facility is located in Osceola County, Iowa. The turbines stand 420 feet tall including the 153-foot long blades; rotor diameter of 314-feet (96 meters). The 100 MW facility includes 40 turbines and was placed in service in 2008.
On February 5, 2017 in Aquilonia, town in the province of Avellino in the Campania region of Southern Italy, a wind turbine near the road began to turn very fast, then disintegrated, throwing pieces around and forcing the car drivers to make a U-turn. The scene was filmed by some citizens by chance and then spread through the social networks.

Nonetheless, the video demonstrates the type of danger a turbine can pose when sited too close to where people may live or gather.

Iberdrola Renewables' Streator Cayuga Ridge South Wind Power Project located in Livingston County, IL experienced a catastrophic failure at one of the 150 Gamesa G87 2.0 MW turbines. Illinois residents caught the fire on video.
A turbine at Iberdola Renewables Farmers City wind project was destroyed by flame. This short video was taken approximately 30-45 minutes after the fire reportedly started. The 146 megawatt (MW) project is located in Atchison County, in the northwest corner of Missouri. The 73 Gamesa G87 (2.0 MW) turbines were commissioned in 2009.
Half an hour before midnight, a report of a wind turbine on fire was received at the West-Viru County. Falling pieces of burning turbine required traffic on the road nearby to be shut down throughout the night. Sparks ignited both sides of the road.

The Fowler Ridge Wind facility experienced a catastrophic fire at one of its over 300 turbines. The Benton Review newspaper caught footage of the fire. Benton County dispatchers said fire crews were called to 100 South and Meridian Road just south of Fowler after there were reports of a wind turbine on fire.
One of the Mill Run Wind Energy Center's ten 1.5 megawatt turbines fell to the ground. The project was placed in service in 2001 with total nameplate capacity of 15 megawatts (10 turbines x 1.5 mw). The project was constructed in 2001 and is owned by NextEra Energy.
