Janet Nicholls said bits of fibreglass and a huge blade from the machine came crashing down into the field where five of her and her husband David's nine horses were grazing. The collapse was part of mass devastation across Cornwall. ..."Part of the machine still looks like it's going to fall off. It's been there four or five years.
Baur calculates: Since 2016, there have been 16 fires, 15 blade and nacelle accidents and 4 tower damages involving wind turbines in Germany. With tons of equipment and high rotor speeds, there is a "high risk potential for people and buildings in the area".
I write here a cautionary warning for those who may mistakenly think that today’s wind energy is that quaint throwback to olden days. Old –fashioned windmills were not connected with miles and miles of high voltage underground and overhead wires. If your rural community is presently under siege by a mega-billion industrial scale wind turbine developer, Buyer beware. (Editor's note: The incident described in this piece involving the turbine failure occurred the week of August 27, 2018)
He said a wind turbine four miles south of Zearing off U.S. Highway 65 was damaged by the tornadoes that ripped through Iowa earlier this summer, leaving one blade dangling. Then, lightning struck it during the storms this weekend.
A Mitchell County family of five is temporarily out of a home because of an out of control wind turbine. ...The company put the family up in a hotel, but has not been able to say how soon they can go home. The failed turbine was part of Third Planet Windpower's Loraine wind facility placed in service in two phases in 2010 and 2011. The facility consistes of 67 GE 1.5sle turbines (phase 1) and 100 GE 1.5xle turbines (phase 2) for a total nameplate capacity of 250.5 MW. The approximate coordinates of the incident are: 32.408429N, 100.685522W
Built in 2002, the turbine had been out of commission since May last year after being struck by lightning, according to the Japan Times. News footage showed how the turbine had been torn from its base by the strong winds, with its 20-meter-long blades badly damaged by the impact with the ground.
The giant windmill was found to have collapsed at around 6 a.m.. Parts of it had fallen onto a road that runs alongside the park.
A malfunctioning wind turbine sparked a grass fire near Arlington that burned about 2,000 acres on Thursday. Joe Claughton, North Gilliam Rural Fire Protection District chief, said no buildings were burned, but two railroad trestles caught on fire. The fire started about half a mile from milepost 3 on Highway 19 by Rattlesnake Road.
A defective GE 2.5MW wind turbine erupted in flames at the Caithness Shepherds Flat wind energy facility causing fire to spread to more than a thousand acres of brush. The failed turbine was located at Rhea Road and Highway 19 just East of Arlington, Oregon in Gilliam County. The project was commissioned in 2012 and includes 338 turbines (845 MW) making it one of the largest in the United States.
A railroad bridge burns Thursday night (Aug. 2, 2018) in Arlington, Oregon. Firefighters said a wind turbine caught fire, sparking a blaze.
One of the thirteen Gamesa 2.0 megawatt turbines at the Lynemouth wind farm near Ashington caught fire.
Wind-warped turbine sits still about a half mile north of E29 on Highway 65. One of the blades was bent like a rabbit ear due to storm-related winds that came through Central Iowa last week. It was the only one with this kind of damage in the pod of turbines.
The city is dismantling a series of recently-erected 10-metre-high wind turbines along the Lake Ontario shoreline amid fears they could fall on beachgoers.
KEOKUK, IA — Three wind turbines impacted the Des Moines River Bridge in Keokuk Saturday morning just after 6:30 a.m.
"We do not believe this fire was accidental. There are traces of break-ins at the access doors to the towers," according to what the public prosecutor in Valencia, Alex Perrin, was told.
The incident involved one of 5 turbines at the Ransonmoor wind farm located in the Fens of Cambridgeshire. The project consists of 2 Senvion MM82 and 3 Gamesa G80 wind turbines for a total nameplate capacity is 10.1 MW. The Gamesa turbines were placed in sevrice in 2007; the Senvion turbines followed a year later in 2008. The damaged turbine was built by Gamesa.
A wind turbine is being allowed to burn itself out after being struck by lightning. Fire crews are at the scene of the blaze at Ransonmoor wind farm, near Doddington, following the lightning strike in the early hours of the morning.
Footage shot by firefighters at the site shows the nacelle of the turbine burned out, one blade still burning, smoke damage at the base of the tower, and smoke billowing out into the Fenland countryside.
Many wind turbines are now 20 or even 25 years old. This increases the risk of serious accidents, of which some failures have already been reported. TÜV therefore demands the introduction of a mandatory inspection program in Germany.
