PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - The site is secure around the wind turbine that caught fire last Sunday night on the University of Maine Presque Isle campus.
The damaged turbine was one of 30 Vestas V110 2.2 turbines at the Hog Creek Wind facility that is owned and operated by EDP REnewables. The project was placed in service at the end of 2017.
The turbine was located less than 300 feet from the school's soccer fields.
According to UMPI President Ray Rice, the generator of the wind turbine caught fire around 10:45 last night. Rice said that produced an electrical surge which caused a good portion of the University to lose power.
Oklahoma Forestry Services reports that on March 28 a wind turbine two miles south of Weatherford caught fire, throwing sparks to the ground. The sparks caused a grass fire that was contained after growing to approximately five acres. Eight fire engines responded to the scene and were able to contain the fire.
“It appears that the turbine generator caught on fire and the overload from it subsequently tripped the campus breakers,” Rice said in a statement. “This caused most of campus to lose power."

Erosion repairs to the turbines could cost millions of pounds as the owners are forced to carry out emergency repairs to 140 of the turbines.
The Hanover fire and highway departments responded to a report of smoke coming from the wind turbine on Pond Street Friday morning.
The citizens group, Gegenwind Borchen, shows on its website photos of fiberglass parts of shredded turbine blades scattered several hundred meters away. The fragments are from an Enercon E-115 turbine that experienced a catastrophic failure within days of the turbine being erected. The mayor of Borchen, Reiner Allerdissen, called for an immediate halt to construction at the facility until the cause of the failure is known. The turbine stands about 200 meters (656 feet) high.

The turbines ran for three months before one blade fell to the ground 190 feet below. Then a second blade crashed through a nearby storage building's roof, falling into a conference room. No one was hurt. The city asked the builders to remove the contraption and rebuild it. That happened. Then another blade came loose.
Vern Martin, a mechanical engineer and vice-president of Flowcare Engineering consulting company in Cambridge, Ont., believes a blade may have malfunctioned and struck the column, causing it to buckle.
