BPA: Wind Energy flatlines during the week of Jan 20-27, 2014

Bpa-generation-jan20-27-2014_thumb BPA, which transmits and sells wholesale electricity in eight western states (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California) barely registered any wind power generation in the week beginning Jan 20, 2014 to January 27, 2014. Look for the green line along the bottom of the graph. BPA has 4,515 MWs of installed wind energy. BPA balances the ups and downs of wind energy primarily with hydropower generated at federal dams resulting in no net reduction of carbon emissions. Blade failure in Michigan

04236_wind2_thumb DTE Energy found a part of a blade had fallen off one of its turbines located at the Thumb wind facility in Michigan. The Thumb wind facility went into commercial operation in December 2012. The project consists of 110-megawatt (MW) (69 1.6-megawatt GE wind turbines).

Spring Valley wind facility

Springvalleywind_thumb The Spring Valley Wind project towers over nearby vehicles. The project, located 30 miles east of Ely, Nevada, includes 66 Siemens 2.3 MW machines. The Spring Valley project went online August 8, 2012 and is the first in the State of Nevada.

Wind turbine wake effects

The downstream wind turbines lose 20% or 30% of their power, and sometimes even more, relative to the front row. The spacing of the turbines is 7 rotor diameters.

This picture was taken only one month after First Wind submitted its permit application for the project to the State of Maine for approval. Apparently, First Wind is confident it will win approval.

Repairing a wind turbine

Turbine_under_repair_thumb Technicians remove the blade assembly on Carleton College’s wind generator as the gearbox undergoes repair. The two-month process of fixing it involved finding a crane tall enough and heavy enough to remove the giant blade assembly from the top of the 230-foot tower.
