An 18-inch piece of the serrated edge of a wind turbine blade broke off and was thrown at least 400 feet from the turbine sited in Ontario, Canada. The saw-toothed edges are meant to reduce noise from the turbines and improve the efficiency of the machine. More information can be found here.
A 44-meter wind turbine collapsed following a lightning striking one of the 26 turbines at the Little Cheyne Court wind facility.

A lightning strike damaged one of the wind turbines at the Horseshoe Bend Wind Park outside Great Falls.
There was another turbine blade failure at the Wildcat Wind I facility owned by E.ON Climate and Renewables. The incident occurred sometime during the evening of April 2nd. The turbine is located just east of 500 East and north of Hiway 28 in Tipton County.This is the second blade failure at the project since February. The 200 MW project, consisting of 125 GE 1.6 XLE turbines was placed in service at the end of 2012. No cause of failure has been reported although lightning is an expected cause. The broken blade was found on the ground between 75-100 feet from the tower.
Iberdrola's Locust Ridge wind energy facility experienced a catestrophic turbine fire. The project, located in Mahanoy City in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, was constructed in two phases and totals 64 Gamesa 2 MW turbines across more than 10 miles of ridgeline. Phase I (13 turbines) was completed in 2006. Phase II (51 turbines) was placed in-service in 2009. The turbine was permitted to burn itself out.
DTE Energy's 112 MW Echo Wind project is under construction in the townships of Elkton, Chandler, and Oliver in Michigan's Huron County. Construction of the wind facility's 70 GE 1.6 MW wind turbines was completed in mid-October. GE's commissioning of the project was scheduled to be completed by the end of November. The company suspended commissioning activities after experiencing a catastrophic blade failure on Nov. 7, 2013.
Infigen takes down their scorched Kumeyaay Wind turbine following a December 16, 2013 fire which sparked a brush fire on the land leased from the Campo tribe. The 25 Gamesa 1.5 MW turbines were first installed in late 2005 and suffered a still unexplained catastrophic failure during a storm in December 2009 which resulted in all 75 blades and generators being replaced in early 2010. An Infigen v Gamesa lawsuit was settled last year. The Gamesa turbine that burst into flames in December was about 4 years old. These photos show the burning turbine and its dismantling. A Vestas 67-meter-high wind turbine burst into flames late Friday night causing a loss of around 1.2 million euros. The cause of fire is still unknow. The Vestas 1.65 megawatt turbine located between Echtrop and Bergede drew 20 firefighters to the scene.
BPA, which transmits and sells wholesale electricity in eight western states (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California) barely registered any wind power generation in the week beginning Jan 20, 2014 to January 27, 2014. Look for the green line along the bottom of the graph. BPA has 4,515 MWs of installed wind energy. BPA balances the ups and downs of wind energy primarily with hydropower generated at federal dams resulting in no net reduction of carbon emissions. One of the Mill Run Wind Energy Center's ten 1.5 megawatt turbines fell to the ground last night. The project was placed in service in 2001 with a nameplate capacity of 15 megawatts. The facility was developed by Atlantic Renewable Energy and Horizon Wind Energy, and constructed and operated by NextEra Energy Resources.
The Mill Run Wind farm consists of 10 1.5-megawatt turbines. The distance from the ground to hub-height is about 210 feet. Total turbine height is about 300 feet. The wind farm began operation in 2001.
The Invenergy California Ridge Windfarm experienced a turbine blade failure. The 200 megawatt (134 GE 100-1.6 turbines) is located in Vermilion and Champaign counties in Illinois. Similar failures occurred at the project eariler in 2013.
Invenergy's Orangeville Wind Farm (formerly known as the Stony Creek Wind project) experienced a catastrophic blade break. The project, which is still under construction includes 58 GE 1.6-100 wind turbines (94 megawatts). The turbines are scheduled for commission the second week of December 2013. Witnesses at the site told WindAction that blade debris flew past the 511-foot safety zone set by the town for participating landowners, 700 feet from property lines for non-participating neighbors, and 1100 feet from non-participating neighbors' structures/residences. The setback distances were requested by Eric Miller of Invenergy to get more turbines in a smaller area.
WInd turbine fire at the 21 MW Piet Wit wind farm on the Dutch island of Goeree Vlakke. A video of the burning turbine and flaming debris can be seen here. Two technicians lost their lives as a result of the fire at the Deltawind’s 21MW Piet de Wit wind farm near Ooltgensplaat in the Netherlands. The two mechanics (ages 19 and 21) were working on one of 12 Vestas V66-1.75MW turbines when the fire erupted. Deltawind suggested a short circuit on the unit could have caused the fire but no official report has been released. The project was undergoing scheduled maintenance.
Perhaps one of the saddest stories of wind turbine destruction. Two men, aged 19 and 21, died as a result of the fire in the turbine nacelle.

The Middlemoor and Wandylaw projects as seen from Holy Island across the Pilgrims Way. Middlemoor consists of 18 turbines, each with a height of up to 125 metres (including the blades) and a maximum generating capacity of 54 megawatts. The project was placed into service during the summer of 2013. The separate Wandylaw project consists of 10 turbines, also each standing 125 meters in height, with a capacity of 20.5 megawatts.
