Wind Tower Collapses South of Diller

BEATRICE –  One of the wind turbine towers in the Steele Flats Wind Farm near Diller, has collapsed.  The tower is a half-mile west of Nebraska Highway 103 and one mile north of Nebraska Highway 8.  The tower is part of the $138 million wind farm, developed by Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources, which includes 32 wind turbines in southeast Jefferson County and 12 more in southwest Gage County.

Iowa: Nextera Wind Turbine Blaze

This 2.5 MW Clipper model C-96 turbine, part of NextEra's Endeavor I Wind Energy Center, burned for hours before this video was taken. The video shows the turbine's massive blade fall to the ground after first standing on its end before collapsing into a trail of black smoke and flames. The Endeavor I facility is located in Osceola County, Iowa. The turbines stand 420 feet tall including the 153-foot long blades; rotor diameter of 314-feet (96 meters). The 100 MW facility includes 40 turbines and was placed in service in 2008.

Catastrophic Turbine Fire, Again, in Texas

Donleycounty-turbinefire-1_thumb There was another fire at an operating wind plant in Texas. The turbine was part of the 174 MW Salt Fork Wind project, located in Donley and Gray Counties, east of Amarillo. The 87 Vestas V100 (2.0 MW) wind turbines was installed by EDF Renewables and placed into service in December 2016. EDF Renewables sold the facility to the Southern Company. Blade breaks off wind turbine east of Enid

The broken blade sits about 100 yards behind the wind turbine, crushing all of the corn that surrounds it. The cornfield belongs to Ken Carpenter, who declined to comment. Cleaning up the blade and wind turbine could take anywhere from a couple of weeks to two months, and will involve bringing a large crane near the field to take the blade off, McIntyre said.

'Forgotten washer' heard in hub before wind turbine collapsed in Cape Breton

Enercon's email did not elaborate on the hub's damage. However, documents from the Labour Department regarding a subsequent stop-work order said a hub assembly was damaged in a "bearing failure" in March 2016. On Aug. 17, workers tested the turbine's lightning-protection system, which required positioning the blades so they pitched into the wind.

Vestas wind turbine collapse in Lemnhult, Sweden
