Wind industry accused of blowing off worker safety rule

Thousands of the giant wind machines violate a federal requirement to give technicians who work inside the towers enough maneuvering space to get up and down their ladders safely. The standard says the space near the ladder should be free of permanent obstructions that could cause serious head or back injuries if a climber slips or is moving fast.

Wind farm worker killed inside Iowa wind turbine

A NextEra wind-turbine maintenance worker has been killed while working on a project in Iowa. According to a statement released by the local sheriffs office, the worker fell while inside the tower of the Clipper Windpower 2.5MW Liberty turbine located at the Endeavor wind centre. Reports say he fell over 60 feet.

Bellevue teen killed by fall from wind turbine

A Bellevue teen died after an apparent fall from a wind turbine, family and friends say, but police have yet to confirm what happened. Bellevue police officials said only that they are investigating the death of Ernesto "Ernie" Garcia, 17, who died early Monday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

Minnesota wind energy firm faces $378,000 fine

The technician suffered third-degree burns in the accident at the Iberdrola Streator Cayuga Ridge South Wind Farm near Odell, Ill. An investigation by OSHA found Outland didn't ensure technicians placed locks and tags on ground-level switches. A worker flipped a switch, energizing a transformer while the technician was working 350 feet above.

Fatal collision with met tower

Ntsb_fatal_with_mettower_thumb On January 10, 2011, at 10:57 PST, a Rockwell International S-2R, impacted a meteorological tower (met tower) during an aerial application on Webb Tract Island, Oakley, California. The airplane sustained substantial damage and the pilot was killed. The met tower was erected for the purposes of planning a wind energy facility.
