Gearboxes had to be replaced because they were made of “not the best metal from overseas,” Buda said. Specifically, the metal came from China. The gearboxes were designed by General Electric, with some produced in the United States, and some produced in China, said Austin Osentoski, wind technician for DTE, who was also at the meeting.
“I’m concerned with the future development of wind farms in the Moosehead Lake area of Somerset County and the effect that will have on our tourism business, which is 95 percent of our livelihood,” Richardson said. “Without these transmission lines in place, they will not be able to sell the wind energy to Massachusetts. This is a critical piece of the puzzle for the power companies.”
BEAVER TWP, MI -- DTE Energy is exploring the possibility of developing a wind farm in Bay County.
Town documents show the height for the proposed turbines would be 519 feet. By comparison, Providence’s Superman building stands at approximately 428 feet, and the New England Institute of Technology turbine is 156 feet. Polisena says neighbors shouldn’t be concerned.
Rep. Gary Glenn, R-Larkin Twp., attended the meeting and said he saw a pattern from DTE of not showing up for debates on wind energy. Glenn said DTE has repeatedly refused invitations to appear before the House Energy Policy Committee for debate-type events. "...both sides were offered 20 minutes to make their case," Glenn said.
Rodney Votra, the town supervisor in Parishville, wrote a letter on Tuesday to the Siting Board in support of Mr. Snell ...“When tasked with selecting nominations for the ad hoc committee, I was very transparent about selecting individuals from both sides of this issue,” wrote Mr. Votra in the letter. “This appears to be nothing more than an attempt by Avangrid to silence the opposition.”
Russ Phillips, a former Caston school principal who lives in the proposed wind farm area, came to their meeting with a set of questions. He received answers to some, but not all, of them. There are some things, commissioners said, they just don’t know yet about the proposed wind farm.
The Nordex Group has adopted a cost-cutting programme to respond to the continuing decline in demand and the sharp change in market conditions in its core market Germany as well as in other European countries, as already announced before.
Gill-net fisherman Richard Stevens said there’s so much fishing at various times of year in the proposed areas that the “entire map should be colored in.” He suggested the turbines will make a difficult navigation at sea even harder. “It’s hard enough to work with each other,” putting fixed gear out of the way of trawlers. “Now if you’re trying to avoid wind farms, that can create real problems. It will.”
A project to construct 100 wind turbines near Ivanhoe has provoked outrage among construction unions representing workers in and around southwest Minnesota, who say the project is largely being done by employees outsourced from out-of-state
From stares and mumblings at public meetings to stolen wind signs and frequent opposing opinion pieces in North Country This Week, Avangrid’s proposed 40-turbine wind farm has impacted friendships and family relationships in Parishville and Hopkinton.
As small towns like Parishville and Hopkinton have struggled in creating wind turbine laws, many residents wonder if elected officials are capable of handling such a large-scale project and making a decision that is best for everyone.
Water well advocates chained themselves to a tractor wheel weights and refused to leave
The Vermont Public Utilities Commission on Thursday refused to reconsider its rejection of the petition for a certificate of public good for Kidder Hill Wind, a two wind turbine project in Irasburg and/or Lowell, saying the application is incomplete without a study of how the project will impact the electric grid.
A Comanche County landowner addressed the board about the wind farm recently constructed there. She said she owns 648 acres and is surrounded on three sides by giant wind turbines. “I can walk around my place and count 57,” she said. “They intrude on every aspect of our lives. “The noise is the worst part, and it varies in tone, volume and intensity,” she said. “Sometimes it is like a giant fan, but most times it is like a constant roar that never stops.
In its decision it said that the council ‘considered the proposed development would form a significant visual intrusion in the landscape by reason of the height and spatial extent of the proposed turbines ...altering its reading as a rolling rural landscape to a more industrialised scene, when the accumulation of both existing and permitted windfarm developments are viewed in the setting.
Many communities forced against their wishes to live with giant, dominating turbines took scant comfort from believing what they were told at approval: This is temporary; the turbines will come down after 20 years; the land will be returned to its original state. While no-one thought the latter would be true, people did think the monuments to a failed energy policy would be removed and not left rusting on the hillsides like abandoned follies as they have in other countries.
North Meath Wind Farm Ltd has launched a High Court challenge after it was refused permission for a 25-turbine wind farm outside Kells.
"They have been billing Kenya Power," said an energy sector source who sought anonymity, adding that the government could be absorbing a Sh700 million monthly burden, piling the pressure on taxpayers.
Among reasons for project delays were the lack of a license for construction, the lack of economic feasibility due to macroeconomic changes. A major de-contracting reason was also the demise of Argentine wind turbine maker Impsa which left over 1GW of stranded projects.
