Open houses show split between Jefferson, Lewis counties on wind turbine development near Fort Drum

As the community looked toward potential development conflicts with Fort Drum, wind turbines kept coming to the forefront. In Jefferson County, the issue has sparked a coalition among Fort Drum advocates, echoing military concerns about the impact of turbines on aviation and weather radar systems, and residents who oppose turbine projects in the area.

'Wind Blind?'

One of Fort Drum's biggest assets and a key to its future is the airspace above it, says one's the post's strategic planners. But these days it shows more than aircraft. The blue patches are the Maple Ridge Wind Farm in Lewis County and the wind farm on Wolfe Island. Each turbine shows up separately and adds to the radar load.

Once a lease or an option to lease, which gives the company the ability to use the lease or not as they see fit, is signed, it is very difficult to re-negotiate. Everything from the location of the lease and easements for roads to decommissioning the structures at the end of their life has to be worked out, and leases often last for 20 to 40 years.

Wind company agrees to changes

Conflicting points of view regarding the placement of new wind turbines were exchanged during the last County Board meeting on Nov. 7. On one hand, Faribault County residents such as Johanna Hocker are staunchly opposed to the Oza Tanka Wind Project. Hocker voiced her concerns during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Amazon plans to expand to 15 Central Ohio data centers

The Consumers' Counsel isn't buying the feint: “Nonetheless, it can be expected that AEP will seek to collect from other customers, through charges on customers’ electric bills, the revenues AEP would forgo as a result of the discounts proposed in the application,” the agency filing says. The unknown billing borne by other customers is "not limited or capped,”

Possible wind farms divide Fulton County residents

People in Fulton County are divided about are divided about possible wind farms coming to town. Thursday night county commissioners held a public meeting to learn about the details of the plans. RES, a renewable energy company, is the company being considered to bring the turbines to town. They're working on projects in Miami and Cass Counties as well.
