Iowa: Nextera Wind Turbine Blaze

This 2.5 MW Clipper model C-96 turbine, part of NextEra's Endeavor I Wind Energy Center, burned for hours before this video was taken. The video shows the turbine's massive blade fall to the ground after first standing on its end before collapsing into a trail of black smoke and flames. The Endeavor I facility is located in Osceola County, Iowa. The turbines stand 420 feet tall including the 153-foot long blades; rotor diameter of 314-feet (96 meters). The 100 MW facility includes 40 turbines and was placed in service in 2008.

State of Mind: Wind farm encroachment

News of a possible wind farm development near a northwest Texas Air Force base has raised concerns about protecting military properties from outside development. Related legislation is poised to be a part of this legislative session. This is part of our "State of Mind" video series. The 15 military installations based in Texas prepare thousands of service members and generate more than 136-billion dollars in economic activity each year, according to the state comptroller. State lawmakers want to ensure nothing interferes with the bases’ missions.

Catestrophic tornado: 1 turbine blade lands on a daycare, location of other 2 blades unknown

The blades of a wind turbine located at a vo-tech center in Oklahoma were thrown by a tornado that hit the area. One of the blades smashed into a daycare center a quarter-mile away. ABC News reports that the whereabouts of the other two blades are still unknown. In addition to this single turbine, the Canadian Hills wind energy facility is eight miles away. Another project is proposed in an area just 3 miles away. Duration: 4 minutes 17 seconds
