Invenergy plans to use new turbine, eliminate 46 Alle-Catt turbine sites

Alle-Catt Wind Farm opponents spent the weekend addressing envelopes to Invenergy leaseholders pointing out plans to scale back the number of turbines in the 340-megawatt project spanning five towns. The letters being sent out by members of Farmersville United and Freedom United say as many as 46 of the 117 turbines in Freedom, Farmersville, Rushford, Centerville and Arcade “would be completely eliminated.”

Boards snub $10 million Nextera settlement offer

“Our responsibility here is to carry out the law, which we did, and to support the law, which I’m here to do,” Campbell said. “No amount of money is going to cause me to alter my decision to comply with this law.” Campbell then pointed to the card in front of him, containing his name and identifying him as an AZBA member. “If you look at this card here, my name is Bill, not Judas,” he said. “And 30 pieces of silver will not buy my reputation and my character.”

Why Lackawanna's turbines don't always blow in the wind

Ever notice how many of the wind turbines on the old Bethlehem Steel property along Lake Erie don't rotate, even on windy days? Now we know why. The company that manufactured parts for the turbines went bankrupt, and the owner of the turbines in Lackawanna and Hamburg can't get replacement parts.

New bill would give residents a say in wind farms

Under the current law, the authority to approve or deny wind energy projects belongs to the Ohio Power Siting Board. But Ohio Rep. Bill Reineke, R-Tiffin, and Sen. Rob McColley, R-Napoleon, introduced companion bills Wednesday in the Ohio House and Senate that would give communities a chance to vote on the issue. The bill in the house has several cosponsors, including Rep. D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron, who represents Erie and Ottawa counties.

Officials rail against 'false accusations'

After first denying a setback variance for project in 2015, the Allegany County Board of Zoning Appeals voted 2-1 on Oct. 17 to permit the project. Dan’s Mountain LLC must now try to gain approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission to proceed with construction. Opponents of the wind farm say the turbines create excessive noise pollution, light flicker and destruction of neighborhood views.

Invenergy hopes to work with winners in Tuesday's town elections

Alle-Catt opponents were elected in three towns on Tuesday: Farmersville, Freedom and Rushford. Farmersville and Freedom elected majorities of candidates who are opposed to the wind farm due to setback issues, shadow flicker and infrasound concerns. The 2018 Freedom wind law was struck down in state Supreme Court in Cattaraugus County ...The new wind laws increased the maximum height of the turbines from 450 to 600 feet at Invenergy’s request.

Iowa's betting big on wind energy, but it's creating a problem: What happens to the blades once they're no longer useful?

"This clean, green energy is not so clean and not so green," says Julie Kuntz, who opposes a Worth County wind project. "It's just more waste going in our landfills." Daniel Laird, a U.S. Department of Energy researcher, acknowledges that disposing of the blades is a challenge. Wind energy generation, now topping 100 gigawatts nationally, will create 1 million tons of fiberglass and other composite waste, said Laird, director of the National Wind Technology Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado.
