Md. Democrats at war over Chesapeake Bay project

U.S. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), whose district includes the Patuxent River naval base, has been a leading proponent of the state legislation, working behind the scenes to round up votes by arguing that the windmills' impact on the economic fortunes of the naval base and neighboring communities may be dire. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) issued a statement to The Baltimore Sun over the weekend saying she, too, favors delay -- a potential blow to wind power advocates given her popularity throughout the state.

CMP wants Mainers who generate their own power to pay more

When those customers are generating power from their own energy sources, they’re not buying power from CMP, thereby reducing the company’s revenue. CMP wants to charge those customers a special rate to reflect the fact that even though they aren’t buying power all the time, they expect CMP to provide them with reliable distribution service. It’s an issue in other states, too, as power companies adapt to increasing power generation “behind the meter,” on-site by small-scale producers.

Wind industry study: Electricity prices skyrocketing in largest wind power states

The objective U.S. Energy Information Administration data show nine of the 11 largest wind power states are experiencing skyrocketing electricity prices, rising more than four times the national average. Moreover, eight of the 11 are rising more than twice as fast as the 39 states with less than 7 percent wind power generation. How, then, does AWEA claim these 11 largest wind power states are experiencing declining electricity prices?

Oregon Senate passes bill to protect state renewable energy mandates

A bill designed to shield Oregon's renewable energy mandates from a potentially game-changing ballot measure sailed through the Senate's Business and Transportation Committee Tuesday, even as opponents called it a back-room deal hatched to benefit industry insiders and ignore average citizens. ...Irene Gilbert said the bill circumvents the opportunity for citizens negatively impacted by the renewable mandates to have a say in what is counted toward meeting them.

Lawsuit claims Mass. officials overstepped their authority with Cape Wind contract

Recent legal events prompted the alliance to take this new approach. The opposition group was emboldened by two decisions last fall by federal judges in Maryland and New Jersey. Those decisions, which are both now under appeal, essentially said regulators in those states infringed on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s authority to set wholesale electric rates by imposing contracts to help finance the construction of natural gas power plants.

Wind energy of no use in the Pacific Northwest

Bpa-load-graph-jan2014_thumb Over the last several years the Pacific Northwest spent about $5 billion and impacted over 50,000 acres of pristine public land for the privilege of throwing away 9 billion kWhrs of carbon-free energy every year. Just so we can meet an arbitrary state mandate, claim we’re green, and make a few folks lots of money in tax credits, the cost of which gets passed onto the rate-payers and tax-payers.

Oregon panel close to fixing renewable energy mandate to avoid ballot fight

A small group of public utilities led by Umatilla Electric Cooperative asked the Legislature last year to change the definition of qualifying resources under the law to include the region’s massive supply of hydropower. Umatilla is close to going over the three percent threshold, triggering the stiffer requirements. Including hydro resources would let it off the compliance hook.
