Explosive troubles with Wyoming County Wind Projects

I write here a cautionary warning for those who may mistakenly think that today’s wind energy is that quaint throwback to olden days. Old –fashioned windmills were not connected with miles and miles of high voltage underground and overhead wires. If your rural community is presently under siege by a mega-billion industrial scale wind turbine  developer, Buyer beware. (Editor's note: The incident described in this piece involving the turbine failure occurred the week of August 27, 2018)

The roiling debate over wind energy

Some would argue there has never been a more controversial issue in Palo alto County as wind energy. What began as a way to protect the rights of citizens, landowners and the environment in the county, has turned into a legal war.

Antrim man to record sound data on Antrim Wind project

“We decided it would make sense to get started as soon as possible so we can have a baseline bunch of data of infrasound for this area before turbines go into operation,” Block said. “When they do go into operation – which is at least a year off, according to their building schedule – we will be able to chart the differences.”

Cass officials mull review of wind rules

"I'm concerned there's something we're missing and I would like to propose that we put a committee together to look at this a little further," Pullen said as attendees burst into applause. Stacy Odom, also a plan commission member, later agreed with Pullen, calling wind energy an ever-changing industry and that local rules would ideally reflect that somehow.

Schneider: Bald Eagles at Galloo Island wind project site

Schneider-response-dec-actions-eagles_thumb Clifford Schneider, a biologist and former Lake Ontario unit leader for the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, submitted this memo to the New York State siting board outlining the process he followed when informing the State of at least one active bald eagle nest within the proposed Galloo Island Wind project site. Until this letter, neither the State nor Apex, the project proponent, reported eagles in the area. Mr. Schneider raises concerns regarding the response to his report of eagles by the applicant, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Department of Environmental Conservation. An excerpt of his memo is provided below. The full memo can be accessed by clicking the links on this page.

Wind turbines affect migrating waterfowl

Among the many things that have been discussed about the erection of 32 574-foot high wind turbines on Galloo Island is the effect such machines might have on birds of prey and song birds. We should not miss the probable devastating effect they would have on waterfowl, primarily ducks and geese.

Juniata officials who didn't favor wind ban targeted for recall

Over several months, there has been a plethora of recalls filed against the three township officials that were denied by the Tuscola County Election Commission because of lack of clarity or sufficiency against Juniata Township officials. The wording on the last recall was approved and that is the one that is moving on to be listed on the November ballot.
