Morning storm left a Copenhagen Wind Farm Turbine short a blade

Sandi Briner, senior vice president of communications for EDF Renewables, the parent company for the wind farm, confirmed in a written statement that a “fault alarm” on the turbine notified wind technicians in the site area that there was a problem at about 8:50 a.m. A team went to the site, confirmed the damage and secured the access road leading to “turbine 30,” as the impacted turbine is designated.

Texas Turbine Fire

View_volunteer_fire_department_5_thumb A wind turbine caught fire in southwest Taylor County in Texas. Crews worked through the night to contain the flames but it had already spread to 200 acres and was only contained by 50%. The fire appears to be caused by turbines at the Buffalo Gap wind energy facility located SSW of Mulberry Canyon. Buffalo Gap was built in three phases beginning in 2006. Phase I consists of 67 Vestas V80 turbines for a total capacity of 120.6 MW. Phases II and III include 155 GE SLE turbines and 74 Siemens turbines. The total installed capacity for the three phases is 523.2 MW. The fire is being called the Rhodes Ranch 3 fire. The Rhodes Ranch 1 fire, which happened in 2009 and burned 2000 acres, was also caused by a wind turbine. Buffalo Gap is owned and operated by AES Wind Energy.

Glander went on to write that the Coast Guard may make the same recommendation for Vineyard Wind that it did for the Block Island Wind Farm, a research analysis indicating whether the turbines “produce radar reflections, blind spots, shadow areas, or other effects that could adversely impact safety of navigation.” If there are negative impacts to marine radar, Glander wrote, Vineyard Wind should recommend how to remedy them. If such remedies are necessary, he wrote they should be “funded by Vineyard Wind.”

Collins calls wind turbines in Lake Erie 'devastating' to border security

Collins, citing an agency white paper, said customs officials are concerned. “They are confirming the threat is not only real, but it would be devastating to know what’s coming across from Canada into the U.S. because this would be blocking all the way to the Canadian border,” Collins said. “These wind turbines would basically create a blackout area that would be a very large percentage of what we would be able to see all the way to the Canadian shore.”

The turbine that sparked the fire was part of the Juniper Canyon facility located in Klickitat County in Washington State. The project, which is owned and operated by Iberdrola Renewables (now Avangrid), was constructed in two phases during the period from 2010 to 2012. It consists of 128 turbines (63 in Phase 1; 65 in Phase 2) and has a total installed capacity of 251.2 MW.

GE probes third turbine collapse at US wind farms this year

GE Renewable Energy has identified and addressed the root causes of the two turbine failures earlier this year. The May incident is understood to be down to an issue experienced during a turbine reboot addressed with a software update. The earlier collapse at the Casa Mesa Wind Energy Center is being attributed to a fuse-related blade issue while the turbine was running in overspeed mode during high winds.
