Bald Head officials want turbines farther from lighthouse

"I think the concern is that the visitors experience the view-shed of a 200-year-old lighthouse," said Chris Webb, director of the Old Baldy Foundation. "There's been a concerted effort from the beginning ... to have a very harmonious environment, so when you look over the island you don’t see massive structures. You see some rooftops, but mostly what you see is the maritime forest’s color."

Wind turbines will blight Lake Ontario shoreline

Residents of both affected towns have responded in opposition in multiple surveys. The Somerset Town Board is 100 percent opposed and the Yates town supervisor, who had not opposed it, was voted out of office in November. The legislatures in Niagara and Orleans counties are on record against it. New York State Sen. Rob Ortt told a packed meeting at the Barker Fire Hall on Dec. 8, “This project needs to stop. My focus is to kill the project.”

Future of Clay County windfarms is up in the air

“Are we really going to fundamentally transform the county from this rural setting that you see to more of an industrial type complex, and I think the majority of people now are saying, ‘No that's not what we want,’ ” Baldwin said. To him, wind farms are a blight for several reasons, among them: They ruin the rural skyline, hurt land values and reduce the acreage used for agriculture.

Bowers Wind Project denied by Supreme Court

Bowers-decision-dec-3-2015_thumb The Court upheld the Board of Environmental Protection's (BEP's) conclusion that the project's sixteen turbines would have "an unreasonable adverse effect on the scenic character and existing uses related to the scenic character” of nine of the lakes which the State recognizes as "Scenic Resources of State or National Significance".

Anti-turbine crowd weighs in on Lighthouse Wind

Two hours after opening, the fire hall was still full of upset residents visualizing the wrecking of their hometown. Wind turbines seemed an unlikely candidate to join the “not in my backyard” family of unwanteds such as hazardous waste landfills and nuclear power, yet the environmental group SOS had attacked wind power from many angles. The crowd, who knew each other by name, seemed to have reached an opinion before arriving and their skepticism was only strengthened by the end of the meeting.

State asked to re-evaluate Livermore Falls settlement deal

Members of the friends group said they were pleased to receive the money. But Linowes’ group said it is not an adequate amount. “The monster electric poles travel along Route 25 and Route 3 and cross over the Pemigewasset right at the historic bridge for a length of approximately 13 miles. Unsightly metal poles standing well over 50 feet now straddle the remains of the bridge and sit on state-owned land."

Deal would turn out the lights on some wind turbines

Several years of wind energy boom in the mountains east of Tehachapi and the desert around Mojave drew the ire of locals as hundreds of the massive machines were installed in stately rows along ridgelines and across the desert. One major complaint was the red lights shining from the top of the towers -- lights powerful enough, critics said, to drown out the stars.

Deal struck to sell NH wind farm power to Mass.

Though Iberdrola Renewables hasn’t filed an application for the project yet with the state’s Site Evaluation Committee, the company has signed a 15-year agreement to sell power to a group of Massachusetts utilities. The agreement will benefit Massachusetts’ Renewable Energy Portfolio and its electricity customers, though there are questions about its value to New Hampshire.

Cape Vincent officials air concerns over recent BP Wind visual impact survey

BP failed to include all residents in a recent visual impact survey for the proposed Cape Vincent wind project, leaving out women in particular, according to town officials. In a recent letter to the state Public Service Commission, town officials said "many residents of the town of Cape Vincent did not receive surveys, particularly women."

Maine DEP staff gives thumbs down to Bowers Mountain wind project

In a draft decision released Wednesday, staff members said the project, proposed by a subsidiary of First Wind, would have an "adverse effect" on the scenic character of eight lakes that are within eight miles of the proposed project. The Glenkens community is divided on the issue, with arch opponents GLARE and their backers lining up against those keen to lever in windfall cash.
