Wind energy transmission line OK'd; Electricity generated in western Kansas will be sold in eastern states

The approval depends on the developer, Clean Line Energy, getting approvals from the Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana state utility commissions before starting construction in Kansas. The order also specified that construction must begin within five years, and that Clean Line can’t recover any of its costs from Kansas ratepayers.

Northeast Utilities plans additional transmission to meet capacity needs

"We think that it is likely there will be significant additional transmission investment needed to maintain reliability and improve access to these clean, intermittent power sources," Lee Olivier, executive vice president and chief operating officer, said in an earnings call Friday. "But it is too early to estimate how much that additional investment will be and exactly when it will occur."

Utility says it would bury power lines for project in Vermont

PSNH has maintained that running underground transmission lines would make Northern Pass economically unfeasible. But critics said TDI New England's proposal not only disproves that claim, but could place Northern Pass out of the bidding since New England Clean Power Link would provide comparable energy to the New England market — without the community and political opposition Northern Pass has engendered.

County residents speak out against Rock Island Clean Line at public forum

At a public forum on Monday, residents of La Salle County spoke out against a proposed power transmission line that would run through the county. The forum was at the Mendota High School gymnasium and was moderated by the Illinois Commerce Commission, which is in the process of considering Rock Island Clean Line's application to build a 3,500-megawatt high voltage direct current power transmission line across Illinois.

DOE should suspend Northern Pass permit application

The Northern Pass project has been controversial since its announcement several years ago. No amount of advertising can disguise that this project is not ready for prime time. Given the misrepresentations in the amended application and the fact that the project has not reached the minimum threshold of attaining meaningful site control, the U.S. Department of Energy should suspend its process to consider the granting of a Presidential Permit to Northern Pass.

Group opposes power line project

Clean Line Energy of Texas wants to build a high voltage DC power line across northern Iowa and into Illinois to pipe electricity from Iowa’s wind farms to a number of eastern states. To move forward with the project, the company either has to negotiate easements with property owners or gain control of their land through eminent domain.

Wind developer clashes with power grid operator

Minimum Generation Emergencies generally occur during temperate nights, when power demand is at an annual low. Blomberg said that when this happens, the first generators to be called off are those outside the region. The next generators ISO calls off are the “self-schedulers.” These are the generators that bid into the market at their leisure. Most, if not all, of New England’s renewable energy generators fall into this category of power producers because renewable power less predictable. ...It would be almost impossible for a renewable energy producer to participate in the day-ahead market because the risk is too high.

Deepwater proposes cable landfall at Scarborough State Beach; Opposition to the project is renewed

Deepwater Wind announced on Tuesday, Sept. 24, that it plans to install its electric transmission cable at Scarborough State Beach, located in Narragansett, R.I. Deepwater had originally planned to install the cable at Narragansett Town Beach, but withdrew those plans in August due to opposition from residents and the Narragansett Town Council.

Wind energy export system might be too small

The $1.6 billion transmission system to take export Texas Panhandle wind power downstate is almost finished, but the Energy Reliability Council of Texas already is looking at options in case all the announced wind farms are built without enough transmission lines to move their power. The wind farms that have requested ERCOT review have production capacities totaling more than 11,000 megawatts.
