This decision letter issued by the United Kingdom energy secretary reports that the Mynydd y Gwynt wind energy proposal has been denied. Reasons for the denial include the secretary's inability to determine the project's impact on red kites resident at the Elenydd-Mallaen special protection area (SPA). This report presents a highly important contribution to the conservation of golden eagles in Europe. A penetrating analysis of data from all golden eagle territories in Scotland has yielded a clear picture of the constraints on this bird. In particular, the sustained persecution of golden eagles in some areas and the consequences of heavy grazing pressure in the west are significant issues which must be addressed to allow golden eagles to attain favourable conservation status.
