Logan County Board approves wind farm on 8-4 vote

Changes made by developers of a wind farm that the Logan County Board rejected in January were enough to win project approval on a second vote. The board voted 8-4 at a Tuesday night meeting in favor of granting a conditional use permit to the controversial $400 million development.

Major wind farm to get second Logan County vote

Board Chairman David Hepler said Monday commissioners are prepared for large turnouts at an initial board meeting scheduled for Thursday at the Logan County Courthouse and at a second meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, when a board vote is anticipated. Both meetings are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Zoning Board split on wind farm vote

The Logan County Zoning Board of Appeals came up with a two-to-two tie vote on a conditional use permit for the Meridien wind farm project on Wednesday. As a result, the project will go before the Logan County Board on July 16 and 21 with just five conditional recommendations from the ZBA.

US Wildlife looking at impact of accidental kills by wind farms

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is developing an environmental impact statement to evaluate the potential of issuing incidental take permits for protected bird and bat species if regional wind industry development grows. According to a news release by the service, the states within the plan are Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. It is called the Midwest Wind Energy Multi-Species Habitat Conservation Plan.

School Board votes 'no' on wind farm agreement

One person speaking in opposition referred to the contract as a bribe and another raised the question as to whether or not the conditions of the contract were within the authority of the school board. The board also heard from a man who once lived within the footprint of an existing wind farm and has since abandoned his home due to the sleep disturbances he said his family experienced once the turbines were activated.

Official 'screws up' wind farm vote

"I was frustrated with myself and embarrassed that I didn't pay attention to what I was saying," he told the station. "My vote would have ended this. I screwed up. By admitting this, I will catch a lot of heck. It's eating me up." ...This week officials said the re-vote would happen at the county board's next monthly meeting, which is July 16.

Wind farm project not dismissed

In his report, he noted that while the ZBA found that the application met or generally met the vague “special use” provisions in the county code, it did not meet other standards, such as Standard 3(ii), which states that “The Special Use will not substantially and permanently injure the appropriate use of neighboring property.”
