Bird-strike fears raised over plan for offshore wind farm in Kyushu

Collisions with the propellers of windmills at a planned offshore wind power plant could further reduce populations of rare birds on islands here, the Wild Bird Society of Japan warns. The society in November submitted a set of recommendations to the Kita-Kyushu city government, calling for a review of the project planned by wind farm operator Glocal Corp.

Alarm mounts as wind power turbines halt after govt stops purchases

Investors in the Jhimpir Wind Corridor are alarmed as their projects have now suffered an unprecedented shutdown of six consecutive days since the federal government halted all offtake from their wind farms. “We had been seeing depressed offtake for almost two months now,” a leading investor in the project who did not wish to be identified by name tells Dawn. He says they saw between zero and 10MW evacuated on certain days over the last few months.

Syrians strike in protest against Israel wind turbines

Activist Dr Nasser Munther said that the company which is carrying out the project convinced 31 farmers to rent their land to it by telling them it is an environmentally friendly project. However, Munther said, senior researchers from the Institute of Applied Sciences found that the project is harmful to the environment, to the residents and to the future of farming and tourism.

Lower capacity utilisation hits wind turbine manufacturers

According to data compiled by the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association, the country has the ability to produce equipment for adding 10,000 MW of wind power generation capacity every year. Comparably, 1,700 MW of wind power generation capacity was added in 2017-2018 and just 1,520 MW of capacity was added in 2018-2019.

Save the Great Indian Bustard from wind power projects

Draft offshore wind energy rules put 30,000 megawatt wind power goal in limbo

The lease of an offshore wind power project can be cancelled if it is found to be “causing environmental damage to both flora and fauna beneath the sea and posing threat to human life and property while carrying out the activities under water and operation of the wind energy turbines during validity of the lease.” The draft rules also contemplate powers to the Centre to order closure of a wind farm pending an inquiry within a reasonable period if it finds “operation of the wind turbines is causing damage to environment or damage to property or pollution.”
