Reid calls for Democratic push for energy plan

LAS VEGAS -- Sen. Harry Reid called Wednesday for a 14-year federal energy plan that he said would encourage renewable sources of power and ensure domestic supply.

Reid said he wants Senate Democrats to unite behind an Energy Independence by 2020 campaign that he compared with the 1960s race to put a man on the moon. The program would improve national security, stabilize prices and improve the environment, he said.

"Tapping into renewable energy as a viable power source is not just a distant concept," the Democratic party leader said in a statement released during a news conference at a Las Vegas home powered by solar energy.

"Today, more and more homes like this one are powered by renewable resources, drastically reducing energy costs," he said. "I want to make sure that national commitment to renewable energy begins right here in Nevada."

Reid said funding his initiative will create millions of new well-paid jobs and keep money in the U.S. that would otherwise go to oil-producing countries. The program includes proposals that attempt to keep oil companies from price gouging, open up gasoline and jet fuel reserves and increase funding for energy assistance programs for low-income people.

Senate Democrats' recent attempts to pass similar legislation have failed. In November, the Senate rejected an amendment to ban price-gouging during national energy emergencies and voted down a profits windfall tax on oil companies that would have funded a low-income heating assistance program.

Reid said lawmakers should increase incentives for producing solar, wind and geothermal resources and increase domestic production of biofuels. He also called for the construction of a natural gas pipeline in Alaska.
