Palm Springs windmill catches fire off I-10, then reported spinning out of control

About 5:50 p.m., Palm Springs police said that 19th Avenue between McLane Street and Karen Drive was closed because a windmill was spinning out of control.

One of the iconic Palm Springs windmills caught fire late Monday afternoon off Interstate 10.

A motorist called the California Highway Patrol just after 5 p.m. and reported the fire.

Palm Springs firefighters rushed to the scene. The blaze did not appear to affect the interstate's traffic.

Some 4,000 windmills blanket the San Gorgonio Pass, where winds regularly blow west to east about 30 mph.
