WOODWARD, Okla. — A wind turbine caught fire Tuesday morning near Woodward, Oklahoma.
The fire was reported about 10 miles north and 2 miles east of Woodward. KOCO 5 Storm Tracker Shane Helton, who was on the scene, said it also sparked a grass fire nearby.
Firefighters from multiple agencies, including Woodward and Mooreland fire departments, responded and extinguished the fire.
A cause is under investigation.
The turbine that caught fire appears to be one of the 68 GE 1.5 MW (102 MW in total) wind turbines included at the Oklahoma Wind Energy Center located in Harper and Woodward counties in Oklahoma. The facility is owned and operated by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources and in-service since 2003.
