Fire hits Dutch wind farm

An explosion was  heard prior to the fire at the Dutch wind farm, Zeewolde, which is one of the country's largest; Two technicians were on the site when the accident happened.

NETHERLANDS - A wind turbine was destroyed by fire and two technicians  treated for injuries after an accident at a Dutch wind farm on Tuesday. According to local media, there is no information on the cause of the fire. An explosion was heard before the fire broke out at 12 noon. Two service technicians at the project site near the city of Zeewolde were treated for injuries and later released.

Fire officials were unable to put the fire out due to the height of the turbine, leaving the fire to burn out on its own. The area around the turbine was cordoned off to avoid risk to the public should the tower collapse. The wind facility is located in an area of the Netherlands where many other turbines stand, including the Zeewolde wind project which includes a total of 220 turbines and 90 new ones proposed.
