At 6:20 PM on Monday a wind turbine.was reported on fire at Oederquart.
Clouds of thick black smoke filled the air over Oederquart district Stade. The huge turbine standing around 70 meters kept firefighters from working to put the fire out. They had no choice but to stand by as parts of the nacelle and two of the three rotor blades blew to the ground. Numerous onlookers watched the evening fire.
Against such fires, the task forces are powerless due to the height of the wind turbines, a police spokesman. Therefore, they blocked the plant from a wide area and could burn under the rotor blades and the turbine. No firefighters have sufficiently long aerial ladders to address the fire. "Therefore, the controlled burning is so far our only alternative," the spokesman explained in order to avoid emergency personnel from being harmed by falling parts.
Technical defect likely
The most likely cause of the fire was a technical defect according to police in an initial statement on Tuesday. Probably a bearing had gone hot. Fire investigators will visit the site in the next few days to determine the exact cause. The experts can only go up to the tower after the system has cooled. The damage amounts based on recent estimates could be several hundred thousand euros.
