Bureau County zoning recommends vs. big wind farm

The Bureau County Zoning Board of Appeals is recommending the Bureau County board turn down all conditional-use permits for the proposed Walnut Ridge LLC wind farm. The recommendation came after a public hearing Wednesday night.

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Zoning Board of Appeals is recommending the Bureau County board turn down all conditional-use permits for the proposed Walnut Ridge LLC wind farm. The recommendation came after a public hearing Wednesday night.

The company was asking for 127 conditional-use permits, 44 variances and an extension on the installation of a substation, staging area, 99 power poles and a transmission line. They were proposing a 225-megawatt wind farm, with approximately 123 wind turbines spanning around 14,000 acres on agricultural land south of Walnut.

According to Bureau County Zoning Officer Kristine Donarski, a 45-page fact-finding transcript from the hearing facilitator will be placed on public record shortly.

The Bureau County board will vote on the permits at the Jan. 12 meeting.
