Some people in the Tavastia Proper of south-central Finland are adamantly set against additional wind farm construction in their municipalities. About 400 people have signed two separate complaints against the Hämeenlinna Administrative Court, and a complaint has also been issued to the Supreme Administrative Court concerning Tavastia Proper land zonings for wind farms.

FINLAND - A new wind farm planned for the small Tavastia Proper town of Sukula has residents up in arms defending their historical town surroundings. Pete Nurmi from the village says that they are keeping a close eye on wind power developments. Others in the Tavastia region are also set against wind farms.

Pete Nurmi, a resident of the village of Sukula and an objector to the side effects of wind farm building, says he believes that the counter-measures will lead to at least a postponement of wind farm construction.

Nurmi also says that the projects are driven through heedlessly, without taking non-monetary realities into consideration.

“Sometimes it feels like I’m not living in a welfare state called Finland,” he says. “These wind farms are just a fad and a drain on regular taxpayers’ income. It is baffling.”

Maps indecipherable, wind company not bothered

Nurmi says that comprehending the maps of the zoned wind farm areas is difficult or impossible.

“People can’t even make out where their own homes or cabins are on them,” he complains. “The accompanying texts are often indecipherable without outside help.”

The region of Sukula and the surrounding areas are cultural-historically significant. There are also vast bird populations at Lake Talpianjärvi and the nearby Torronsuo wetlands.

“Mostly I’m saddened by the fact that market forces are more important to the builder companies than the opinions of the residents themselves,” Nurmi says.

Voimavapriikki, the company behind the proposed wind farms, say the complaints do not factor into their plans. CEO Immo Sundholm says that the official complaints represent nothing more than a delay.

”Voimavapriikki will be conducting preliminary work on the landscape in the meanwhile,” Sundholm says.

Three companies – Voimamylly and Megatuuli in addition to Voimavapriikki – are currently interested in the stretches of land in Southwest Tavastia.
