Windmill at Marine Drive reinstalled

The reinstalled windmill has only three fan leaves, compared to the original five, and the shaft thickness has been increased from two to five inches, said sources. "As we have high winds at Marine Drive, especially in the morning, we have reduced the number of wings in the windmill.

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has remounted the controversial windmill at Marine Drive which had fallen off within hours of its first installation. The windmill was re-installed on Saturday with minor corrections in its designing.

The windmill project was part of GCDA's plan to light up nearly 100 lights glowing on the Marine Drive. The project, estimated at a cost of Rs 3.9 lakh, had turned out to be a massive embarrassment to GCDA after the project disastrously failed to take off on day one itself.

The windmill was set up by United Electricals, a Kollam based Public Limited Company under the state government. "The windmill power will be used to light up the Marine Drive walkway between 7 pm and 11 pm. With a capacity to generate 10 KW and storage capacity of 16 hours, the windmill will be a practical answer to our energy needs", said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.

This and other minor design changes have been made for the perfect working of the windmill", said a company official. GCDA plans to move ahead with alternative energy installation in other parts of the city too, if this experiment turns out to be successful. "GCDA plans to install windmills at Rajendra Maidan too", said Venugopal.
