CORPUS CHRISTI - The 168 wind turbines spinning at Iberdrola Renewables' farm in Kenedy County now are producing power for the state electric grid, company officials announced Wednesday.

Last April, 84 of the turbines began feeding the grid and in May, the remaining 84 became operational. The Peñascal Wind Farm complex, comprised of two wind farms, has the capacity to produce 404 megawatts and has created about 20 direct jobs in maintenance and operations.

CPS Energy of San Antonio and South Texas Electric Cooperative will distribute the 404 megawatts expected to be generated, enough to power more than 140,000 homes and businesses in the region. The project is the largest wind farm in the world for Oregon-based Iberdrola.

Kenedy County also is home to another wind farm, Australian-based Babcock & Brown's Gulf Winds project. It has 118 turbines for an expected annual maximum output of 283 megawatts. Other wind farms in South Texas include the $300 million project in San Patricio County by the developer E. ON Climate & Renewables, and two farms proposed near Hebbronville by Corpus Christi-based American Shoreline, the original developer of Peñascal.

The two Hebbronville farms call for 400 turbines in Jim Hogg, Zapata and Webb counties capable of generating enough to power 220,000 homes.

The Peñascal project, built on the John G. Kenedy Jr. Charitable Trust land, began paying royalties to the nonprofit organization as soon as the first 84 turbines became operational last year, said Mannti Cummins, wind energy director for American Shoreline, which has remained involved in the project.
