DIXFIELD - Townspeople can learn the impact of a tax-incentive financing program for a proposed wind farm when a consultant presents information at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at Ludden Memorial Library.

The board hired Eaton Peabody Consulting Group of Augusta in January to help decide whether it would be to the town's advantage to enter into a TIF agreement with Patriot Renewables LLC of Quincy, Mass. The wind energy firm has agreed to pay up to $10,000 for the town to hire a consultant.

Patriot Renewables has proposed building a wind farm that could include up to 22 turbines along the ridge that includes Col. Holman Mountain.

Eaton Peabody Executive Director Mathew Eddy will make the presentation on Monday. He will provide general information about the TIF program as well as some estimates specific to Dixfield on property valuations, Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky said.

"We're at the beginning of the process to determine whether wind power is feasible in Dixfield," Skibitsky said.

The Massachusetts firm has meteorological towers gauging wind strength and direction installed atop some of the mountains. The firm must also go through an extensive Maine Department of Environmental Protection permitting process.

Skibitsky has said that if the project goes forward, a minimum of at least two more years would be needed to complete all of the preliminaries.

The proposal to construct a wind farm in Dixfield is one of several proposed for the Western Maine area. It has both opponents and proponents.
