QUEBEC (CP) - The Quebec government has unveiled a new energy strategy that involves the construction of dams and investment of up to $25 billion.
QUEBEC (CP) - The Quebec government has unveiled a new energy strategy that involves the construction of dams and investment of up to $25 billion.
Under the plan, 4,500 megawatts of electricity would be produced over the next five years, creating an estimated 70,000 direct jobs. Premier Jean Charest also said Thursday he wants the province to produce more wind power.
Quebec's objective is to reach annual energy savings of $2.5 billion by the year 2015.
The government is also asking Hydro-Quebec to submit a new rate structure to the provincial energy board.
Consumers will be urged not to use electricity during peak hours. So-called "smart meters" will be installed in homes and will allow the utility to charge people lower rates for electricity consumed outside of peak hours.
