Land commissioner leases trust land for wind farm

SANTA FE The state land commissioner has signed a lease agreement with a Santa Fe company that plans to develop a wind energy ranch in Colfax County.

WindForce Incorporated plans to erect 30 turbines capable of producing 20 megawatts of power.

Land Commissioner Patrick Lyons says the wind ranch will consist of 640 acres of state trust land and another 160 to 560 acres of private land.

The turbines will cover between 50 and 60 acres.

New Mexico ranks second in the nation for the number of wind turbines on trust lands.

Lyons says more than seven thousand acres of trust lands in Chaves, Roosevelt and Quay counties have been leased to three wind energy companies.
