Repeal sought for fast-track wind farm authority

Two western Maryland lawmakers have introduced legislation reversing a 2007 law that allows wind power projects to breeze through the review process. The bills introduced by Sen. George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel would end the possibility of "fast-track" regulatory approval for wind farms.

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Two western Maryland lawmakers have introduced legislation reversing a 2007 law that allows wind power projects to breeze through the review process.

The bills introduced by Sen. George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel would end the possibility of "fast-track" regulatory approval for wind farms.

The current law allows wind energy companies with projects of less than 70 megawatts to seek an exemption to obtaining a Certificate of Public Necessity and Convenience. U.S. Wind Force has applied for the exemption for its planned 25-turbine project on Dan's Mountain.

Edwards believes repealing the law would allow more public comment on the projects.

Beitzel says the fast-track authority doesn't allow regulators to consider public safety or environmental and wildlife issues while reviewing the projects.
