"We're looking at 400 turbines in two projects in Stutsman County," he said. "We're not the only people looking at coming to North Dakota. We need your support to put a zoning ordinance in place for wind farm projects."

Metzger was speaking to the Stutsman County Commission concerning the plans of Just Wind to develop a wind farm near Medina upon the completion of their current project in the Napoleon area. He had also spoken to the Jamestown Stutsman Development Corporation last week.

Zoning regulations would define things like setbacks from residences, roads and property lines. The regulations would define where wind turbines could be constructed.

"Without zoning it puts us at risk," Metzger said. "So no one can come in and build a wind farm that interferes with us."

Commissioners referred Metzger to the county zoning board for action.

"We've gone through this with feedlots and solid waste and now this is the next hot-button issue to be dealt with," said Noel Johnson, chief operating officer for Stutsman County.

If the county zoning authority passed a wind farm zoning ordinance they (IT) would then ask all townships that have their own zoning authority to concur in order to maintain a uniform set of rules across the county, Johnson said.
