Plea to paint windmills in red and white

Coimbatore: With the Indian Air Force expressing concern over the safety of aircraft, while landing and taking off, due to tall structures, including windmills in the vicinity of Sulur Airport, Indian Wind Power Association (IWPA) has appealed to its members to paint the mills in red and white patterns.

At an interactive meeting the IAF had with the members of Association here, Wing Commander, C Rajagopalan has said that the tall structures were posing danger for aircraft, especially when they were approaching the aerodrome for landing and while taking off.

To make the area around aerodromes safe for aircraft operation, the Government has specified certain criteria for construction of tall structures and building in the vicinity, Rajagopal pointed out.

Though there were certain procedures to be followed for obtaining NOC for construction, which fell within 20 kms of an aerodrome, no written rules were there on getting NOC while installing mills, which generally have an height of 50 to 76 metres, IWPA has asked the members to paint the mills in red and white, considering the aircraft safety,
Kasturirangaian, its vice-chairman, told PTI.

Requesting the investors to be careful while erecting windmills within 20 kms of aerodrome, Rajagopalan said IAF has planned to expand the runway in near future and it would be advisable to provide red flashing lights on tall structures, including windmills.
