My recent “News and Views” column spoke about issues surfacing in the recent public hearings for two local wind farm projects. I want to offer some clarification. First, they are MY views, not that of the Farm Bureau. Second, I apologize if my choice of words or phraseology caused offense to anyone. I probably was too blunt in my comments.
This issue has become one of the most controversial in recent memory, causing considerable divisiveness in our rural county.
Please understand that I've been around agriculture all my life and love nothing more than being able to claim these proud roots. I also place a high value on renewable energy and the promise it holds for meeting our growing appetite for energy. Finding a balance between these interests has been challenging. There are many outstanding farmers whom I respect highly who are opposed to these projects, and there are many legitimate concerns and questions that MUST be resolved to satisfy proceeding with such ventures. Defining the right location and scope of such projects is critical. I agree that issues such as the Dornink Airport safety factor and tower placement relative to participation density are valid concerns to be addressed.
I acknowledge the degree of emotion and ownership tied to this issue, and I hope that the county board will honor their duty as elected officials to fully weigh all of the issues before making a decision.
This one's for the long term.
