As the debate in the GTA continues regarding how Ontario meets its electricity needs, let's put a few facts about natural gas power plants on the table.
First, natural gas power plants are vastly cleaner than the coal plants they are replacing. They significantly reduce emissions of mercury, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide, which contribute to smog, acid rain and poor air quality.
They also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the associated impact on climate change by approximately 60 per cent. Fine particulate concentrations are decreasing across the province; this is due, in part to better vehicle emission standards.
