This is a letter I just sent to Governor Doyle. If you believe that this could never happen to beautiful Door County, consider the fate of Wolfe Island, Ontario, another quietly picturesque rural area on the Great Lakes. Google it; you'll be horrified.
"Governor, I spent the first 35 years of my life in and around Fond du Lac County.
"Returning after several years away, I find vast swaths of rural Wisconsin being heedlessly vandalized by industrial wind turbines, monstrosities that produce no useful output except tax breaks and carbon offsets for fat cats in Chicago and New York.
"Rural residents are being driven crazy by the constant low-frequency thub-thub-thub of the things and flashing light throughout their homes for more than an hour a day from the shadows of the giant turning blades, not to mention the FAA-required strobes all night. (So much for our clear, starry winter sky.)
"Livestock is being sickened. Painstakingly-cleared fields are chopped up by access roads. The rural landscape is completely destroyed.
"In an ultimate act of sacrilegious insanity, the developers have been allowed to place nearly a hundred of these 400-foot Cuisinarts only two miles from Horicon Marsh, a principle stopover for migratory waterfowl and the largest freshwater marsh in the country, an already-endangered wildlife refuge. All for the sake of a completely feckless power source that uses more energy than it produces and has proven in Europe to cause more, not less, CO2 emissions.
"And this is being done in the name of environmentalism, for God's sake.
"When did Kafka and Orwell move to Wisconsin? And now I learn that the legislature has just passed a bill stripping local governments of any authority over turbine siting.
"Obviously, a state that was once extremely proud of its good government has become corrupt beyond imagination and jumped greedily into the pocket of Big Wind.
"Governor, the only 'green' in wind power is money and the only 'power' in it is money.
"Are you complicit in the destruction of a state you have promised to protect?"
