Reference your article in last week's edition of the Cornish Guardian in respect of the proposed redevelopment of the wind farm at Carland Cross.St Newlyn East
Firstly, I think it appropriate before making any comments that I declare an interest in this proposal, as any redevelopment could have a major impact on us as we live and run a business very close to the wind farm.
Your headline 'Overhaul planned for A30 wind farm' is I think both misleading and a little understated.
The proposal, outlined to me in a letter from Scottish Power, suggests the wind farm is to be replaced with 10 new turbines that would reach an overall height in excess of 125 metres (currently 49 metres) with wingspans of 80 metres (currently 32 metres) - higher than Nelson's Column with a wingspan larger than a Boeing 747.
I would suggest that this is hardly an overhaul but more a major redevelopment of current wind energy output in Cornwall.
The proposed redevelopment of the wind farm will also be enlarged from its current site to include the erection of turbines along the St Newlyn East Downs and through to Fiddlers Green - a doubling of the current area of the countryside used and I suspect a development that must cause some concern to the residents of Fiddlers Green.
Again hardly an overhaul but more a major planning development.
There are seven wind farms in Cornwall, most of them built as part of the first generation of wind power in this country.
If proposals such as those outlined in this 'overhaul' are to be spread across the county I would suggest that the impact on our countryside and environment would be considerable.
However, Scottish Power is making a presentation to our parish council on Monday, March 10 and is also holding a drop-in day at the village hall on Tuesday, March 11. Everybody, not only the local residents, who feels concerned or indeed supportive about the initial proposals should, I think, come and express their initial views on the proposal to redevelop Carland Cross wind farm.
Finally, I always feel concerned when proposed developers (whether they be house builders or electricity companies) write the following when outlining their proposals and I quote:
'As well as providing a significant increase in Cornwall's green energy contribution there will also be a community benefit package associated with the wind farm which will provide funding for projects in the local community'
Is that what I think it is? I hope not.
