Meridian Energy is confident it can address the Department of Conservation's fears about the effects of its 92 square kilometre windfarm in Central Otago.
DoC has lodged a submission to the Central Otago District Council saying the windfarm should be declined a resource consent, despite the Government submitting in support of it.
Meridian Energy has strenuously attacked a suggestion that it has a secret expansion plan for its proposed $2 billion Central Otago wind farm.
It insists that is not the case.
The controversial Project Hayes - to erect 176 wind turbines on the Lammermoor Range, 30km south of Ranfurly - has been opposed by All Black Anton Oliver, poet Brian Turner and artist Grahame Sydney.
North Northumberland’s biggest proposed wind farm is to go to a public inquiry after being rejected by local planners.
The 18-turbine scheme at Middlemoor, near North Charlton, had been recommended for approval by officers at Alnwick District Council.
However, members of the council’s development control committee voted 14-3 to reject the application by npower renewables because of concerns about its visual impact.
A final ruling will still be made by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) but a public inquiry will have to be staged first to give developers and objectors a chance to put their cases before a planning inspector.
Opposition to the project first came to light last year when members of the local indigenous Huave community forced the mayor to destroy a building permit he had signed with developer Marena.
At the same time, a Huave Indian group in the neighbouring town of San Mateo del Mar issued a statement saying it will "take up arms" if the project goes ahead as planned.
Wind farm operators are being paid millions for "wasted" electricity under a complex system known as constraint payments. Since 2011 over £26.5million has been paid out under the constraint payments

The Environment Ministry has decided to ease restrictions on wind power generation within national parks and promote clean energy supplies in an effort to combat global warming, government officials said Friday.
Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plans to work with US conglomerate General Electric on nuclear and wind power generation ventures, a newspaper said on Saturday.
Under the plan, the two firms will jointly bid for a $300-million project to boost capacity by 20 per cent at the 1.36-million-kilowatt Laguna Verde nuclear plant in Mexico, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.
Proposals for four wind turbines near a Derbyshire reservoir have been met with a mixed response from local residents.
Some people have said the 335ft (102m) turbines developers want to build near Carsington Reservoir are too tall but the landowner supports the scheme.
West Coast Energy’s plans for the turbines must first win approval from Derbyshire Dales District Council.
Campaigners fighting plans for six wind turbines near a mountain bike centre in south Wales are looking to visitors to back their fight to stop the scheme.
It's a green energy proposal that has torn apart Perth County communities. Invenergy Canada has a contract to build up to 27 wind turbines in North Perth and Perth East.
Now a Perth-Wellington's MPP is asking the premier to use her power to intervene.

Building a 75-foot-tall wind turbine adjacent to a quiet subdivision is a nuisance because, in part, it ruins the scenery and creates noise, the Nevada Supreme Court has ruled.

A recent state Supreme Court ruling could finally lead to wind turbines being erected in the town of Prattsburgh.
But opponents to a plan to have 53 energy generating wind turbines constructed along hilltops in northern Steuben County aren’t giving up the fight.
The long-running battle between country folk and government over windfarms took a new twist today as a war broke out between the Scottish Executive and a conservation body which has called for more “green” electricity generation.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and its Scottish branch have in the past angered many rural communities for being outspoken supporters of wind farms - which mainly serve towns and cities but are always located in the countryside.
But the Scottish RSPB today issued an outspoken protest about re-designed plans to build the UK’s largest windfarm on the Isle of Lewis, in the Western Isles, which it says is “one of Scotland’s most sensitive and important sites for wildlife.”
The new rules will allow the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to switch off the flow of power from wind turbines if there's too little demand.
Wind operators will be compensated.

No cause, no answers 7 months after Kahuku wind farm fire
February 26, 2013 by Brianne Randle in KHON TV 2

Seven months after they started spinning, the Kahuku wind mills stopped because of a fire. ...under a 20-year contract First Wind could face sanctions if the project doesn't get going again.
Richard Tamplin, the planning inspector who heard the appeal, ‘applauded’ the ‘dedication and persistence’ of Mr and Mrs Bradford and acknowledged that the urgency of meeting Devon’s renewable energy targets for 2010 weighed very heavily in favour of the proposal. However, he judged the benefits were even more heavily outweighed by the unacceptable harm to the character and appearance of the distinctive local landscape around the appeal site. The adverse impact on the viewpoints of Brent Tor, which he said was ‘such an unusual and special place’, and Pork Hill, ‘would damage the special qualities of the National Park’. The size and motion of the turbines would destroy the fragile quality of this ‘quiet, still landscape’ and would be ‘wholly inappropriate’ to the setting of Brent Tor and the scheduled barrow cemetery on the crest of the Beacon just below. The ‘alien feature’ would also cause ‘significant harm to the longer views’ from the National Park and the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. One of the statutory purposes of Dartmoor as a National Park would be compromised. He also considered there would be a significant adverse effect on the residential amenity of people living up to two kilometres from the site.
The households have complained that the noise from the turbines, which have an overall height of around 100 metres, has turned their lives upside down and made their lives unbearable.
The constant pulsating noise has led to sleep deprivation and is impacting on the health of those living close by.
A residents group has appealed last month's decision by the Municipality of the District of Chester to grant the wind farm a development agreement.
Members of the Friends of South Canoe Lake are concerned about the setback distances of turbines and their potential effects on residents' health and property values.
Nuclear, Renewable Energy At Heart Of New E.U. Policy

The European Commission on Wednesday called for a “new industrial revolution” via increased investment in renewable energy and nuclear power to combat climate change and curb Europe’s energy dependency.
The proposals come as concerns over Europe’s energy security are making headlines as a bitter dispute between Russia and Belarus has disrupted the transit of oil supplies to Europe.
The commission’s proposals are based on a forecast that the region’s energy imports will jump to 65% of consumption by 2030, when 84% of gas and 93% of oil will come from overseas, and sets out ways to reduce the block’s dependence on Russia and other suppliers.
As its main measure, the paper proposes a 20% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions from the European Union’s energy consumption by 2020 and calls for a sharp increase in the use of renewable and biofuels.

The PTC's fate could be decided within the broader negotiations in Congress over how to overhaul the tax code for the first time since 1986. Lawmakers on the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee have been meeting privately for months on the topic, and additional details are expected to be rolled out over the course of this year. But it remains an open question whether tax reform will become a reality.
