Urbana's prosecutor has raised concerns about a proposed construction staging area near Three Mile Road and U.S. 36. for turbines by the Buckeye Wind Project. The city recently reached an agreement with Robert Rothschild Farm that would extend a sewer line to that area as part of a proposed expansion at Rothschild.

FirstEnergy, the publicly traded utility based in Akron, pushed lawmakers at the end of 2012 to freeze energy efficiency standards, according to The Columbus Dispatch. The company previously has argued that mandates on utilities increase costs for consumers.
Environmental groups and green-energy proponents don't like talk of tinkering with the standards.

Board of Education members will seek quotes for replacing electric boilers in Conneaut Middle School with natural gas versions, an indication they may be ready to pull the plug on its experiment with wind power. ...The turbine, built in January 2010, was expected to provide the school electricity at a rate that beats FirstEnergy's prices. However, the generator has never performed as billed and for more than a year has been completely inactive.

IPoliticians and residents are watching with worry as three companies make the rounds asking landowners south of Petrolia to sign leases for wind turbines.
Enniskillen Mayor Kevin Marriott says in the last few months three companies have been speaking with the municipality about projects which could bring as many as 51 turbines to the rural township south of Petrolia.

Public Service of New Hampshire is interested in municipally owned land near the town's industrial park, prompting Northern Pass opponents to speculate that the company may be changing direction and planning to bring power lines down the Vermont side of the Connecticut River, crossing into New Hampshire at Littleton.
Administrative Law Judge Kevin Casutto says there's no public need for a transmission line between the wind farm project and the mainland.

California is weighing how to avoid a looming electricity crisis that could be brought on by its growing reliance on wind and solar power. ...the surplus generating capacity doesn't guarantee steady power flow. Citing a lack of substantive activity on the project, an administrative law judge has recommended the state Public Service Commission dismiss an application to construct a 50-mile electric transmission line from Galloo Island on Lake Ontario to the mainland. ...the application "lacks viability at present" and has had a "chilling effect" on landowners and their plans for business development.

The OPSB can either approve the project as submitted, require changes or reject the project entirely. Those in favor of the wind farm said it will bring needed revenue and jobs and few negative affects on residents. Opponents have said the project is too close to homes, and some have even threatened to move out of the county if the project is approved.

An application for occupancy of right of way in Custer County for transmission lines for a proposed wind farm has been put on hold while the project looks to work further with neighbors to limit inconveniences to them. ...neighbors in the area of the project complained at a previous meeting of the commission, saying they didn't approve of all the construction, noise and view obstructions that would be a result of the project.

Nearly 50 residents attended a meeting held Tuesday by a group opposing wind turbines in northern Mercer County. Most at the meeting simply asked questions. ...Van Wert resident Ron Schumm, whose neighbors have turbines, said the turbine company tore up the roads and did not adequately repair them.
"They will destroy your roads," he said. "That's something the county and townships should be aware of."

The operators of the New England grid are restricting the amount of electricity being accepted from the three operating wind projects in the Northeast Kingdom and the North Country of New Hampshire.
And there's no indication that the restrictions, called curtailments, will end anytime soon.

Holly Karg, the commission's public affairs director, said energy lobbyists attend events of the exchange council, but Snitchler was above the fray.
"He was not being lobbied at those events; he was speaking at them," she said.
His financial disclosure form indicates the commission reimbursed Snitchler for about $175 in meal expenses for the two 2011 meetings. He reported no travel costs.

The problem is the electricity network gets out of synch if the turbines produce more power than is being used at any one time.
So ISO issues an order to ramp back power. It's called curtailment.
"We are seeing those interconnect issues with other wind projects. As we've seen the Dixville project in New Hampshire was curtailed about 50 percent," Hallquist said.
The turbine has not undergone the level of scrutiny required for a smaller proposed turbine that stirred up controversy on adjacent property at Camp Perry.
That project, a proposed 198-foot high, 500 to 600-kilowatt, federally funded turbine, triggered reviews by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
