Around 12:45 Tuesday afternoon, two blades on a turbine were damaged so severely that debris was sent raining down on the field below. ...The owners, EDP Renewables, say while the investigation into what damaged the blades is ongoing, at this point it doesn't appear that strong winds were a factor.
And as representatives from utility companies, the energy industry and the banks that fund them convene to discuss the future of the state's power grid, local officials and residents who fought NYRI say they are hopeful their plans won't hurt local communities.
Following a lengthy, and at times vociferous, discussion of the wind turbine project, council voted 3-2 against proceeding with the first reading of a rewritten ordinance to allow wind turbines in industrial areas. It was then the consensus of council to obtain information from the Putnam County Board of Elections to put the issue on a special election.

Plans by Kalida Manufacturing to build two wind turbines adjacent to its facility met with strong opposition Tuesday night.
During a Union Township trustees meeting Tuesday evening, more than 60 area residents expressed their strong vocal opposition to KMI's plans to purchase 55 acres adjacent to their property and install two wind towers on the property.
Council members made history Monday night by passing unique legislation that bans wind turbines in town.
The new law, which unanimously passed third reading, prohibits the construction of all types of wind turbines, wind chargers and wind generators. It also outlaws any device, apparatus or structure used to convert kinetic energy from wind to produce electricity.

Northern Pass, a $1.1 billion collaboration between Hydro-Quebec and Northeast Utilities, would deliver hydropower to the New England energy grid via a 180-mile transmission line through New Hampshire. From Groveton south, the line would run along existing rights of way owned by Public Service of New Hampshire.

"I think it is extremely premature to sign or cosign anything. For me, I need a lot more specifics about what that compensation, or other form of consideration, would be for us to put our name remotely close to this," said Council President Glenna Hagopian. "I want to see what you are bringing to the table before we move forward."

Nancy Bowen and Eric Romich, specialists with the Ohio State University Extension, spoke for about an hour about wind energy in Ohio and the Blue Creek Wind Farm in Van Wert County. While Bowen said wind projects will not work everywhere, several residents who attended the lecture raised concerns.
Dominion said the right-of-way should be awarded only if the transmission line is approved by the region's electricity grid operator, PJM Interconnection, and after the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management awards leases to energy companies seeking to build offshore wind turbines.

Ring said if the project is not moving forward by June 30, the school district will cancel the project.
"I think we've extended the terms of construction long enough," he said. ...Ring could not provide specifics on the funding he said NexGen lost, and NexGen representatives did not return calls.
Grid operators are not given sufficient financial incentives to connect wind farms to the grid. There is a lack of co-ordination among the authorities as to who is responsible for what. ..."I'm pessimistic for the time after 2015 if nothing changes. No one will go on investing if the grid link is as uncertain as it is now, neither E.on nor others."

"This is beautiful country with huge heritage ranches, amazing biodiversity, endangered species and the headwaters of important rivers ...A lot of people jumped on the renewable bandwagon - it's a sexy agenda. But this is a special landscape, and does this minimal contribution to the grid outweigh the degradation these lines impose?"
