Upgraded transmission line translates to up to 51 wind turbines in Enniskillen

IPoliticians and residents are watching with worry as three companies make the rounds asking landowners south of Petrolia to sign leases for wind turbines.
Enniskillen Mayor Kevin Marriott says in the last few months three companies have been speaking with the municipality about projects which could bring as many as 51 turbines to the rural township south of Petrolia.

While many in the area embraced the new green wind power it's "honeymoon over" for Hoaglin township trustees Wayne Kemler and Milo Schaffner.
Kemler and Schaffner want Iberdrola Renewables to pick up the tab to pave 3 and a half miles of Hoaglin township roads that they say weren't properly repaired.

Wind energy projects headed for Champaign and Logan counties will get up to $3 million in grant awards to move forward with production, Gov. Ted Strickland announced Thursday. ...Diane McConnell, a Union Township resident and member of Union Neighbors United .. said the lack of information that affected residents have received is her biggest worry.
The $53,500 grant is being dispensed as part of the Value Added Agriculture Product Market Development Grant Program. The money will fund a feasibility study of wind energy including wind testing using altimeter.
U.S. offshore wind farm projects, all still on the drawing board, are being planned to include cables from the turbines to a substation on land to bring the power to the existing transmission grid.
The "backbone" power line the governors envision would connect the wind farms to each other, making it easier to spread wind power from areas where the wind is blowing robustly at that moment to states where electricity demand exceeds supply.

3 turbines crash after blades from one break
February 10, 2009 by Richard Payerchin in Morning Journal
February 10, 2009 by Richard Payerchin in Morning Journal
Three wind turbines at Perkins High School crashed Saturday when the blades broke off one of them.
No one was hurt when parts of the fiberglass blades came off the turbine as it spun, winging the blades up to 40 yards away from the silver monopole tower, near the high school at 3714 Campbell St.
The remaining two turbines will not be used until they are inspected and officials figure out what caused the blades to break.
38 Buckeye Wind turbine sites ruled potentially hazardous

The Federal Aviation Administration recently informed Buckeye Wind, LLC. that its study found 38 of the 70 proposed turbine building sites in Champaign County exceed obstruction standards and could be a hazard to air navigation near Grimes Field.
FAA guidelines generally restrict objects taller than 200 feet within five nautical miles, approximately 5.75 standard miles, of an airport that size.
The village of Elmore installed a 50-meter Meteorological Monitoring Tower Friday, Aug. 25, in conjunction with North Coast Wind & Power, LLC, on village property next to the Ohio Turnpike.
The tower will monitor wind and weather conditions for a 12 to 18-month period to collect data for a feasibility study.
500-plus sign canyon petition; Residents opposed to power lines

A petition asking the Texas Legislature to pass a law that would prohibit high-voltage power lines in the northern end of Palo Duro Canyon continues to grow with 522 signatures late Wednesday.
The petition, posted online at www.protectcanyon.com on Sept. 16, is now the focus of a group called Protect North Palo Duro Canyon which is led by members of the Currie family, who own land along the route proposed by Sharyland Utilities.
The agreement approved Monday by the Ohio Power Siting Board allows Black Fork Wind Energy to construct the farm on 14,800 acres along the Crawford and Richland county line. The board says the company plans to begin construction in March.
What Hallquist did acknowledge to questioner Pat O'Neill (an active opponent of the wind project) is that if Co-op members vote down the proposal, Green Mountain Power's alternative route would not just cost more; Green Mountain Power would also need a new or amended certificate of public good from the Public Service Board.
That's because general plans for the 345-kilovolt route, known as the V-Plan and including a connecting line into Oklahoma, appear to take the line through prime nesting and breeding habitat for the Lesser Prairie-Chicken in both states.
With an estimated two-thirds of the unique bird's original habitat already eliminated by development, officials warn that further encroachment could place the bird on the nation's endangered species list.
Across NEK, North Country: Grid operators put limit on wind power use

The operators of the New England grid are restricting the amount of electricity being accepted from the three operating wind projects in the Northeast Kingdom and the North Country of New Hampshire.
And there's no indication that the restrictions, called curtailments, will end anytime soon.
Activist plugging wind farm - will there be interest?

The speaker is set, the invitations are out.
Now all Paul Hunter wants to know is, will the landowners show up?
"There's a lot of potential," said Hunter, for a wind farm (in the sense of "farming" the wind) to be built in the eastern portion of Clinton County. The wind blows strong enough there for turbines to be commercially viable, he says.
Activists see Cape Wind cost shock; Report projects $10B for ‘green' power system upgrades

The region's electrical grid operator has determined that a $10 billion investment in transmission facilities would be needed to move energy from new wind farms to customers across New England.
ISO New England's 60-page report - which put the price tag on a scenario for an additional 8,500 megawatts of wind power - is energizing critics of Cape Wind who contend the offshore project will shock ratepayers with skyrocketing bills.
Adams, Faber and local officials contest Strickland's plans to "erase" turbine taxes

While Ohio Governor Ted Strickland touted elimination of tangible personal property taxes for wind and solar companies Tuesday, that prospect didn't sit well with representatives of the entities that stand to lose up to $1.4 million in first-year tax revenue if the Buckeye Wind project gains approval to construct 70 turbines in Champaign County from the Ohio Power Siting Board this year.
American Electric Power has signed a 20-year deal to buy the power generated by a planned wind farm in Paulding County, the utility said yesterday.
