Lyme Town Council approves quick action on comprehensive plan to limit wind

At a meeting last week, the majority of the council appeared ready to support a zoning law ruling out industrial turbines in the town based on the results of the survey, which showed 64 percent of the 1,621 respondents opposed turbines while 35 percent supported them.

The town has just received the results of a third survey and just like the other two, most residents voiced their opinions against wind turbines in Lyme.
The argument now is, who gets a say in town issues: everyone who pays taxes or just year-round residents?

The town board is seeking bids to complete a project constructing four, reduced size wind turbines funded through a federal grant.
Approximately $320,000 was made available to the town after it was awarded the grant two years ago.

The lawsuit, submitted by Buffalo attorney Richard E. Stanton on behalf of Concerned Citizens, was filed with the Cattaraugus County Supreme Court last week against the town of Allegany Planning Board, the Town Board, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Code Enforcement Officer and Allegany Wind LLC, also referred to as EverPower Wind Holdings Inc.

Noise from Herkimer Co. wind turbines to be studied again

A study conducted earlier this year found that the noise level in some instances went above the 50-decibel level required in the permits for the turbines, Fairfield town Supervisor Richard Souza said.
Another, more extensive study will be conducted starting in late October or early November, Souza said.

Galloo Island project developer Upstate NY Power Corp. was one of the five companies that bid on the project, hoping for a stable price that would provide investors with an incentive to put money into the project.

Galloo Island Wind Farm doesn't have a prayer of getting any money from the New York Power Authority. And neither do any other renewable energy projects, authority staff reportedly said during a conference call Wednesday.
"NYPA's comments were that they were going to put their efforts into upgrading transmission lines and strengthening the grid."

The authority, an independent arm of state government, first proposed offshore wind development in one or both of New York's Great Lakes in the spring of 2009.

NYPA's staff estimated that a 150-megawatt wind farm off the Great Lakes shoreline would require a subsidy of $60 million to $100 million a year.

Town Codes Officer Scott Davies at one time stood to earn as much as $20,000 for leasing his land for a wind project proposed there, but he said in 2010 his land no longer was being considered for a turbine.
