Much of it was driven by a rush of projects spawned by uncertainty over the expiration of a crucial federal tax credit for electricity generated from renewable energy. Congress then extended the wind production tax credit until the end of 2013.

"I am a supporter of wind energy, but they don't have very much regulation in [Oklahoma] and they are moving in towards the Metro area very fast," said Johnson, R-Yukon. "I think we need to slow down and look at some things first."
The city of Piedmont has already denied the placement of wind turbines inside its city limits.

Seventy-six groups led by American Bird Conservancy (ABC), one of the nation's leading bird conservation organizations, have called on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to fully analyze the environmental consequences of a proposed North Dakota wind farm to the endangered Whooping Crane. FWS is considering issuing the first-ever Incidental Take Permit (ITP) to a wind farm for the killing of endangered Whooping Cranes and threatened Piping Plovers.
The Piedmont City Council on Monday delayed a vote on whether to allow landowners to de-annex from the city in a move that would make way for a wind farm development.

Canadian County Commissioners have been asked to place a moratorium on construction of new wind energy towers in northeast Canadian County.
Several concerned residents, worried about a project that will bring large wind turbines to the
Piedmont area. "It is a big county concern," County Commission Chairman Jack Stewart said.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Friday it is considering formally listing the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species.
The announcement begins a yearlong review ...Fish and Wildlife said it made the decision based on evidence the bird and its habitat are in decline.

Officials with Trade Wind Energy and Chisholm View Wind Project LLC managing member Enel Green Power North America, did not respond to requests for comment on the liens. An official with GE Financial Services, the other parent company for Chisholm View Wind Project LLC, declined to comment on the grounds GE is the "non-managing member and does not control day-to-day operations."

Piedmont citizens, led by Mayor Valerie Thomerson, told the planning commission Monday that wind turbines were not welcome in Piedmont.
Commissioners heard that message and voted to table indefinitely a proposed commercial wind turbine ordinance.
Deweese said he has had problems with energy companies running lines on his land in the past.
Danny Feerer also had concerns.
"I chose to live in the country, not in a city, and I don't want giant power lines running across my front door.

In the presidential debate about domestic issues, Romney hit Obama on giving $90 million in tax breaks to wind and solar power projects. Many of them failed, the Republican said, telling Obama, "You pick losers."

LM Wind Power, one of Grand Forks' largest manufacturers, announced Tuesday that it would lay off more than half of its workforce. The company cited a downturn in the wind power industry, largely connected to the failure of Congress to renew production tax credits. Local officials say they're assured LM isn't closing the plant here.

The prospect of the sale was first announced last month, when Otter Tail said it had a nonbinding letter of interest to sell DMI. The company said the economics of the wind power industry and expiring tax credits were hurting demand for turbines.
Dwight Anderson, an Allete executive leading the North Dakota project, testified before the commission that potential buyers last year had expressed interest in purchasing the wind farm's output, but no agreement was struck.
"Interest has waned as the growth and need for energy remained flat or declined in the overall Midwest region."

A planned electricity transmission line for the Canadian Hills Wind project will affect the flight operations of a local crop duster, the company said in court filings. But Apex Wind Energy Inc. said it has obtained the proper easements and permission from federal aviation authorities.
The state, often rated as having the greatest wind potential in the nation, now has about 1,400 megawatts of total wind capacity. ...But notices of intent for new wind farms have stalled since last fall and development has slowed in recent months.
