Scott L. Simons, DTE Energy spokesman, previously told the Tribune that the utility received an alarm at 1 a.m., and later found that one of the blades at the Sigel site appeared to be damaged. Part of a blade had fallen and was on the ground. ...Last year, two GE-manufactured turbines experienced broken blades in East Central Illinois.

DTE Energy has no idea why a portion of a wind turbine blade broke off early Monday morning during a low-wind period at one of the utility's sites in the Thumb Wind Park.

According to Kevin King, chief of field operations and facilities section for all DEQ offices across the state, the turbine may have a gear box failure. The DEQ hired the turbine's original manufacturer to climb the tower and take a peek to see what was wrong, but that proved to be unsuccessful.
Construction crews will have to assess the damage to a wind turbine that caught fire in Missaukee County.

Smith said brief power outages experienced in the area cause the three turbines to instantly stop and recoil, which fatigues the blades in the area where they are likely to break. When the blades are new, they're more flexible and durable. ...we are going to direct all maintenance employees to approach away from the blades and keep visitors away. The blade ejection happens rarely, but we need to err on the side of safety.
