A Vermilion County board committee agreed Thursday night to change the county's wind turbine ordinance by increasing the distance turbines are required to be from a house and increasing the per-turbine permit fee the developers must pay the county.
Village board trustees unanimously approved extending a six-month moratorium on the construction, installation and operation of wind turbines at the Sept. 27 board meeting.
Where's the best place for a wind turbine in Orland Park? What are the advantages of a geothermal system? Should the village add solar power to some of its buildings?
These are some of the questions sustainability consultant Teresa Fourcher will help village officials answer.
The village is expected to use up to $10,000 in grant money from its $200,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant to pay Fourcher.
Village manager Paul Grimes said most municipal staffs don't know a "hill of beans" about renewable energy so some help is needed.
Village of Lee petitions judge to examine how summons were served

Lawyers for the Village of Lee are asking a judge to examine how court summons were served to village board members who are being sued for rejecting a request by an energy company to build six wind turbines near the village. ...The document filed Wednesday asks a judge to investigate who was involved in filing the lawsuit and serving the summons. The document also asks a judge to throw the lawsuit out because it was filed improperly.
Amy Allen, junior in Engineering and president of Students for Environmental Concerns, said that the project has been delayed for seven years.
Logan, who campaigned for the ban, said he was surprised the vote was so overwhelmingly against turbines.
"This is an accurate reflection on how people feel," he said.
He said that although the village board wasn't legally bound to the voters' will, it was ethically obligated to follow suit.
