Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said Wednesday he will decide by the end of April whether to approve a proposed wind farm off Cape Cod that has sparked a bitter, nine-year public fight.

It is not exactly the best time of year for a boat ride, but the chilly weather is not stopping U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
Salazar is scheduled to visit the area Tuesday to meet with representatives from the region's two Indian tribes and to see firsthand the location for the proposed Nantucket Sound wind farm.
According to Salazar's office, he will spend part of the day onboard a boat touring the area.

May 24, 2010 by Michael Collins in Knoxville News Sentinel
Clean-energy proponents who want to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels celebrated last month when the federal government approved the nation's first offshore wind farm off Cape Cod, Mass. ..."It's a taxpayer rip-off," the Maryville Republican said. "It creates a puny amount of very expensive electricity. Taxpayers in Tennessee will be paying extra for it because of the taxpayer subsidies. And it will destroy a very beautiful Nantucket Sound."

Several companies want to be the first to develop an offshore wind farm in the U.S.
August 16, 2009 by Alex Kuffner in Providence Journal
August 16, 2009 by Alex Kuffner in Providence Journal
With plans moving forward in New Jersey and Delaware - not to mention recent progress in Cape Wind's years-long fight in Massachusetts - it's far from certain that Deepwater and Rhode Island will succeed in their quest to be first.
And make no mistake, being first is important. For the developer, it means more than just bragging rights. It gives the company a leg up on its competitors as it tries to develop additional wind farms elsewhere.
For the state, it means much-needed economic development and valuable green-collar jobs.

"It appears that an investigation is warranted in the case of Cape Wind to determine if the FAA acted inappropriately due to political pressure from the administration. Such an investigation would be conducted by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and/or the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure."

December 29, 2010 by Michael Norton in The Register
State energy officials said it would take roughly 800, 5-megawatt turbines to meet the maximum power potential they see in the wind resources south of the islands. Cape Wind involves 130, 3.6-megawatt turbines.
The state supplement asks the industry to think broadly about the build-out of wind energy facilities.

Stimulus job boost in state exaggerated, review finds
November 11, 2009 by Jenn Abelson and Todd Wallack in Boston Globe
November 11, 2009 by Jenn Abelson and Todd Wallack in Boston Globe
While Massachusetts recipients of federal stimulus money collectively report 12,374 jobs saved or created, a Globe review shows that number is wildly exaggerated. Organizations that received stimulus money miscounted jobs, filed erroneous figures, or claimed jobs for work that has not yet started.
The Globe's finding is based on the federal government's just-released accounts of stimulus spending at the end of October. ...But in interviews with recipients, the Globe found that several openly acknowledged creating far fewer jobs than they have been credited for.
