Because the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow, energy storage is viewed as key to promoting cleaner ways of producing electricity.
Energy storage is still under development. Given the intermittent nature of solar and wind, it is viewed as crucial to making clean energy competitive with conventional technologies like natural gas and coal-fired plants.

A Baldwin County commissioner told representatives of a wind energy company today that he is skeptical of their project, and he has concerns it will be bad for tourism.
"The risk to me is too big to take a gamble on this," said Tucker Dorsey, who is the chairman of the four-member Baldwin County Commission.
Two representatives of APEX Wind Energy met with the commission to provide details and answer questions about the company's proposed wind farm.

Selectmen plan to present an amended warrant article when special Town Meeting resumes at 7 p.m. April 10 at the Lawrence School auditorium. ...While Town Meeting Member Marc Finneran said, "This pits money against people's welfare, and I always come down on the side of people's welfare."
Tipton County officials have decided not to accept any new applications for wind farm construction until after a public hearing.
In a rare show of disagreement, San Diego County supervisors split 3-2 Wednesday on whether to order a study that could lead to a comprehensive renewable energy plan.
East County Supervisor Dianne Jacob's call for the study was opposed by North County Supervisors Bill Horn and Dave Roberts, who said the effort could slow down solar and wind projects already in the pipeline.

The moratorium will not affect the juwi Wind conditional use permit approved by the Tipton County Board of Zoning Appeals last month for the proposed Prairie Breeze Wind Farm or placement of meteorological towers.
The moratorium will remain in place until Oct. 1 or until the county's wind ordinance is amended by the Plan Commission and approved by the commissioners.
“If mankind was worried about CO2, rather than paying Jim Gordon $500 million a year and making him wealthy, why don’t you plant a helluva lot of trees because trees and bushes take CO2 and convert it into oxygen,” Koch says. “What Jim Gordon is feeding off of is perception, not reality. The perception is that windmills are good because the wind is free.

The $250 million Lake Winds Energy Park development generates 100.8 megawatts of electricity. Its Vestas turbines are 312 feet high at the hub, with rotor blades having a 328-foot diameter.
