"Ultimately, it comes down to what you personally believe (will be) the impact the turbines will have on Huron County. If approved, I believe the McKinley Overlay District will begin the process of destroying the quality of life for the residents along and near the shoreline, reduce residential property values, discourage tourism and damage migratory bird flyways."

In May, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar signed a right-of-way grant, bringing to a close three years of impact studies for a power plant that will stretch across about 10,000 acres, forming a crescent around the town.
Local conservationists and an Arizona-based tribe that traces its ancestry to the area have turned to state and federal courts to stop the project.

For people living near Burlington, the Passadumkeag Mountain may look like home. But for workers at a Texas energy company, the mountain looks like wind power.
Board member George Heufelder said the state health officials are swamped with requests for studies, but he believes they will respond to the Falmouth request. "They're not beyond moving something to the top of the pile" for political reasons, he said. The state officials should study the health effects of wind turbines, he said, because of the state energy policy promoting wind turbines and the corresponding health concerns.

"The Quechan Tribe has been holding a vigil for the last five days on the site of the Ocotillo Wind project near some recently discovered cremation areas," Terry Weiner, Desert Protective Council's coordinator for Imperial County projects and conservation, told Indian Country Today Media Network on May 30. "There has been singing and telling of the creation story and just being together in this beautiful desert."
The policy states that no turbines should be built within 2km of someone's home, or 10km of a village of more than 10 properties.
The stance has attracted national interest, coming as the Government is expected to slash subsidies for turbines as the mood turns against the structures.
Pulsing sensations in the head, ringing in the ears and nocturnal panic attacks are some of the symptoms which Millicent beef producer David Mortimer claims have led him to consider suicide.
Mr Mortimer almost broke down while giving evidence against Infigen Energy's proposed Woakwine Windfarm.

But for other residents, who live nearby the turbines, they've lost sleep, they feel nauseous and dizzy from the constant noise and the flickering of sunlight through the blades spinning. Some have even had to call out of work due to lack of sleep.
"A proliferation of wind farms would not only have a severe impact on the natural environment, it could also seriously jeopardise a major sector of our economy.
"Similarly, we think it's unfair for residential areas to be blighted by wind farms.

While the decision was praised by environmentalists, local campaigners accused the firm of making token gestures.
It follows a landmark High Court ruling, which stated that the Coalition's renewable energy targets did not outweigh value of the beauty of the English countryside.
Professor Armstrong, appointed this week, said the NHMRC's full review would go well beyond what had been considered previously.
"The rapid review essentially covered the literature that has been published in the peer reviewed literature," he said.
"We will cover any new evidence or literature of that kind since the rapid review was done.

"What you can hear is not the problem," Senie said. "What you can't hear is."
While Senie praised the state's decision on the Falmouth turbines, he said current sound standards are not complete. The "distressing sound pressures" in the sub-audible range that affect neighbors should also be studied.

Quechan contends the project will cause irreparable harm to hundreds of cites including burial and cremation sites, as well as tens of thousands of artifacts. Forensic dog teams hired by tribes last week found six new cremation sites. Tribal members, who in modern times have continued to use the site for ceremonial purposes, also sought to protect views of mountains sacred in their religious beliefs of creation.
