The state will play a major role in deciding whether a windmill is installed at Green Tree Park to generate electricity and help pay for the town's energy costs.
The borough has applied for two Department of Environmental Protection grants, each for $168,000, to fund a proposed $173,000 windmill and solar electric system. The borough would pay $5,000 toward the overall cost.
...Council President Mark Sampogna said, however, he is unsure if council will approve the project, even if funding is secured.
The height of proposed installation, 100 feet to 120 feet, could detract from the appearance of the park, he said.

Reduced Jordanville Wind project fine, Iberdrola tells packed house
November 4, 2008 in The Freeman's Journal
November 4, 2008 in The Freeman's Journal
Spanish multi-national Iberdrola unveiled a slimmer version of the Jordanville Wind Project before a packed town-hall meeting Monday, Nov. 10.
It was unclear, though, if anyone has changed his or her mind on an issue that divided the townspeople of Warren and Stark, where the wind project is planned, and Herkimer from Otsego counties; the northern county gets the benefits, and two counties share the impacts.

In the wake of the province's refusal of the environmental assessment for the Glen Dhu Wind Farm, the company that intends to erect 30 turbines announced Saturday that it was moving the turbines further from houses in Bailey's Brook.
The four turbines along the project's westernmost border - just behind homes in Bailey's Brook - will be shuffled from the area where they were originally supposed to go and instead placed in another section of the farm.
The company will also increase the setback from homes in that area to 1.4 kilometres.

DEQ issues go-ahead permit for MATL power line; State cites potential for wind development
October 29, 2008 by Nancy Thornton in Choteau Acantha
October 29, 2008 by Nancy Thornton in Choteau Acantha
Potential wind-farm development was the overriding reason why the state Department of Environmental Quality approved the proposed high-voltage power line that would tread its way across eastern Teton County between Great Falls and Lethbridge, Alta.
Montana Alberta Tie Ltd., or MATL, with offices in Calgary, Alta., submitted an application under DEQ's Major Facility Siting Act program on Dec. 1, 2005, providing a variety of reasons why its proposed privately-owned, 230-kilovolt transmission line would benefit the region. ...
Aggrieved parties who believe they are adversely affected by DEQ's decision have 30 days to appeal.

Companies proposing wind turbine projects in Prince Edward County will now face opposition from a much larger provincial group.
People behind the Alliance to Protect Prince Edward County (APPEC), a group formed to oppose six proposed wind farms, announced Tuesday they have joined a new lobby group called Wind Concerns Ontario.
The group is a collection of 22 citizens groups across the province who oppose an Ontario government mandate to replace coal generating power plants with windmill projects.

An overcrowded meeting room forced Toronto Hydro officials to cancel an information meeting last night about a proposed wind study in Lake Ontario off the Scarborough shoreline.
Toronto Hydro Energy Services wants to find out if there's enough wind 2 to 4 kilometres offshore to justify planting about 60 big wind turbines in the lake.
Close to 200 people crowded into a meeting room at Christ Church on Markham Rd. ...Many who came to the meeting had serious reservations about the proposal. "This is the wrong place," said Roy Wright, who lives in the Scarborough bluffs overlooking the proposed study area.

Embrace wind farms, Peter Garrett tells NIMBYs
October 23, 2008 by Matthew Franklin in The Australian
October 23, 2008 by Matthew Franklin in The Australian
In an interview with The Australian in Canberra yesterday, Mr Garrett [the Environment Minister] said he was worried by the number of wind farm proposals that had been refused because of objections by the local community.
"Australians have got to realise the time has come to embrace wind and wind farms in appropriate locations, bearing in mind they are going to be visible on the landscape -- that a 'not in my back yard' kind of mentality won't see us rolling out the deployment of wind that we need," Mr Garrett said.

Turbine time again? 80-foot test wind turbine proposed for Little Equinox
October 23, 2008 by Brandon Canevari in Manchester Journal
October 23, 2008 by Brandon Canevari in Manchester Journal
The Planning Commission made a recommendation Monday night that the Select Board review a petition by Endless Energy Corporation (EEC), NRG Systems and Earth Turbines to allow for construction of an 80-foot high, 2.5 kilowatt, wind turbine on top of Little Equinox Mountain. ...But this may not be the last wind turbine activity on the top of Little Equinox in the near future.
In an affidavit in support of the petition, Harley Lee, President of Endless Energy Corporation - a wind development company out of Yarmouth, Maine - stated that EEC was still hoping to install wind turbines on Little Equinox Mountain under a proposed innovative community wind structure that would provide local residents, businesses, and other utility customers with cost effective power.
An earlier proposal to install five, 410-foot high turbines at the top of Little Equinox stirred enormous local controversy in 2005-06.

As the government of P.E.I. prepares plans to triple wind-power generation on the Island, grassroots opposition to the developments is growing.
Many of those wind turbines are planned for West Prince, the area that currently has the largest wind energy production in the province. Monday night, about two dozen West Prince residents gathered to discuss strategies for lobbying the province to take more care about where the turbines are placed.
Opposing points dominate start of wind turbine workshop; Council members not swayed by comments from workshop

October 22, 2008 by Josh Bickford in East Bay RI
A contingent of opposition soaked up the first 90 minutes of a public workshop on the proposed wind turbine project in Barrington on Tuesday night.
One by one, residents, some of whom were members of the group Citizens Wind Watch, approached the microphone at the front of the Barrington High School auditorium and reeled through questions and concerns about the project while some offered reasons the town council should not support building a wind turbine on Legion Way. ...
Despite all the comments, the majority of council members said the workshop did little to sway their thoughts on the proposed project.

Demonstrators blocked traffic into the Eden Project in a protest against plans for a giant wind turbine.
The 127m (416ft) machine would be put on the northern side of the Eden site, near St Austell in Cornwall, if Restormel Borough Council approves it.
Protesters, who called off the demonstration after about an hour, clashed with visitors and police.
Environmental charity Eden said the turbine would have to be large to be economical and to power the site.

Opposition grows over wind turbine; At 292 feet tall, structure would be tallest in Newburyport
October 20, 2008 by Katie Farrell in Newburyport News
October 20, 2008 by Katie Farrell in Newburyport News
At 292 feet tall, there's nothing in the city that comes anywhere near the height of the wind turbine that Mark Richey wants to build at his woodworking factory in Newburyport's industrial park.
It's almost twice as tall as the spire on the landmark Unitarian Universalist Church on Pleasant Street, which at 159 feet towers above the city's skyline.
The turbine has all the permits it needs, but homeowners near Mark Richey Woodworking are starting to rally against the 600-kilowatt turbine on the Parker Street property. They've appealed the permits to Superior Court.

Campaigners fighting proposed wind farms in Northumberland last night admitted they fear the floodgates opening after developers apparently overcame MoD objections.
The Ministry is in advanced talks with RidgeWind Ltd which could see its objection to that company's scheme for Wandylaw, near Chathill, withdrawn.
A public inquiry into the bid resumes on Tuesday when the two sides could reach agreement on a condition which would allow the turbines to be erected.

October 18, 2008 by Tony Sapochetti in The Pantagraph
A grassroots group has sued to stop development of the Streator Cayuga Ridge South Wind Farm in Livingston County.
"We are concerned not only for our interests, but we are concerned with the interest of safety and health of the county's population," said one of the plaintiffs, Cheryl Tate of Blackstone.
People Protecting Cayuga Ridge and 12 individuals are listed on the lawsuit aimed at preventing construction of a $1.5 billion, 155-turbine project spread across 15,000 acres between the communities of Odell and Emington.

From the top of canola-rich Stockyard Hill, Gary Tayler sees no problem.
Green energy company Wind Power plans to build Victoria's biggest wind farm - 282 turbines - in his patch west of Ballarat. He wants 22 of them on his property. ..."We couldn't see any reason why we wouldn't do it," Mr Tayler says. "Most of the turbines will go on to what is stone country. When a situation like this that is not going to interrupt what we're doing comes along, why not take it?"
Cassie Franzose is on the other side of the fence, literally and figuratively. From behind the stone walls of the Federation-era property Mawallok, she says wind farms have their place, just not here.

As opponents of a $120 million wind power development slated for Rollins Mountain, the Friends of Lincoln Lakes residents group will ask the Town Council and planning board next week for a moratorium on all pending wind projects, its organizers said Thursday.
Group members will attend council and board meetings next week after taking in the third hearing held by wind farm proponent First Wind of Massachusetts on Wednesday at Mattanawcook Academy, group member Gary Steinberg said. They fear that local boards haven't had adequate time to learn enough about wind farms' potentially hazardous impact upon municipalities and wildlife.

"We had been all over the world looking for some place to live and we left our heart here in the Finger Lakes and this is where we came back to. We absolutely loved it here...until...we knew about the wind project," Judi Hall said.
The back and forth over First Wind's bid to build wind turbines ended with the company's success. Champions of the project like Tom Casey, who sits on the town/village planning board, say the project puts Cohocton on the cutting edge of new energy and helps the economy.

Residents in the East County are sounding an environmental alert about future wind farms in their community. The battle is heating up over plans to build hundreds of wind turbines near Boulevard. ..."And we're talking over 500 to 600 turbines for now, over 400-feet tall silhouetted on that ridge line," she said.
That ridgeline to the south is in Mexico, where Sempra Energy - the parent company of SDG&E - Is planning on building a massive wind farm. So big, in fact, it will be visible from San Diego County.
