After two and half years of debate, a wind farm ordinance in Whitley County was denied.
The winds died down Wednesday night in Whitley County. The Whitley County Plan Commission denied the final draft of the wind ordinance in a 4:4:1 vote. Five votes are needed in order for the ordinance to pass.

Bob Martin and Josh Hendrick, the only supervisors attending the meeting, agreed to recommend the public hearing during the board of supervisors' next scheduled meeting on June 11. The hearing should be advertised "at least 30 days," said Martin, and Hendrick concurred.

The Village Board unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday that prohibits electric-generating wind devices from being located within the village, said village Trustee Anthony Stepansky. However, residents living within a 1.5-mile radius of the community can. The device cannot be taller than 75 feet and must generate power that is exclusive to the property.

Lake Township Board Trustee Dale Hartsell said he thinks it would be best to take a second look at the zoning ordinance before agreeing to the land transfer.
"I'd like to keep our land in Lake Township and try to work on the ordinance some more to see if we can come up with something everyone can agree on," he said.
